Congratulations to Lorne Doerkson (@LDoerkson) and the Conservative Party of BC (@Conservative_BC) on winning a majority government. We also congratulate all newly elected and re-elected Members of the Legislative Assembly across British Columbia. During the campaign, the Conservatives made important commitments in response to B’nai Brith Canada’s election questionnaire. We look forward to working with the incoming government to deliver on these commitments, including: 1) Formally adopting and implementing the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism across schools, post-secondary institutions, health care, and the public sector; 2) Combating antisemitism in K–12 schools and post-secondary institutions, including through strengthened Holocaust education and enforcement of campus codes of conduct to protect Jewish students; 3) Strengthening the response to antisemitic hate crimes, including through specialized training for police and Crown prosecutors; and 4) Increasing security support and funding for vulnerable institutions. Jewish British Columbians must be able to worship, learn, and participate in community life openly and safely. We look forward to working with MLAs across all parties to advance these urgent priorities. We also thank David Eby (@Dave_Eby) and the outgoing government for their service to British Columbians and their engagement with B’nai Brith Canada and the Jewish community.

We asked members of our community what concerns them most, where they believe antisemitism is being handled least effectively and what action they want to see. Hundreds upon hundreds of responses poured in from across Canada and the message is loud and clear. The Beat reveals more than concern about rising antisemitism. It points to a growing crisis of confidence in the institutions expected to respond to it. Government. Universities. Media. Law enforcement. Social media. Across the survey, respondents repeatedly returned to the same question: When antisemitism occurs, who is prepared to act? Over the coming weeks, we will share what The Beat told us, what respondents are experiencing and what they believe needs to happen next. This is what our community told us. Following a B’nai Brith Canada legal victory last month, the Federal Government has declassified almost all of historian Alti Rodal’s 1986 report concerning Nazi war criminals suspected to have entered Canada after WWII. Read more below:

Today, I stood with members of B.C.’s Jewish community as we marked three years since the horrific attacks of October 7. Jewish people everywhere deserve to live openly and proudly, without fear. In their neighbourhoods, at school, on campus or at places of worship. Antisemitism has no place in our communities.

On today's solemn anniversary of the October 7th Hamas terror attacks on Israel, it was important to come together. Thank you to the Jewish Federation of Victoria and Vancouver Island for hosting such a meaningful evening of remembrance, reflection, and community. We joined Canadians and people worldwide remembering the lives cut short three years ago. Among them was Vancouver's Ben Mizrachi z”l, a 22-year old who was murdered while helping others as a paramedic. May their memory be a blessing. For Jewish communities in Canada and beyond, October 7, 2023 was a turning point; there is a before and an after, and a diminished sense of safety and security in the face of rising anti-Jewish hate. The presence of the Victoria Police Department at tonight's commemoration in our capital city was a reminder of this.  The province has been working, in partnership with all levels of government and community organizations, to counter antisemitism and all forms of hate. Recent public safety investments include strengthening the BC RCMP Hate Crimes Unit, funding to support municipal police departments and increase police capacity, funding to develop training for law enforcement, and grants to help organizations targeted by hate enhance security for places of worship and community spaces. Our recently announced commitment to the Western Jewish Security Network builds on this work. Today was about remembering and grieving, and also about committing to building a safer province for our Jewish neighbours and all people.

Thank you to Conservative Party of British Columbia leader @LDoerkson and our local candidates for joining my community to observe the 3rd anniversary of the atrocities of October 7th 🎗️ 🗣️ “To British Columbia’s Jewish community: you are not alone. You should never have to hide a Star of David, fear attending synagogue or worry about sending your children to a Jewish school.” -Lorne Doerkson

B’nai Brith Canada welcomes the six-month jail sentence imposed last week for the antisemitic defacement of Victoria’s Congregation Emanu-El synagogue in August 2025. We thank the Victoria Police Department for its investigation and the BC Prosecution Service for its work in bringing the perpetrator to justice. The impact of targeting a synagogue in this way goes beyond the damage to the building itself. It harms the entire Jewish community, both in Victoria and across Canada. This custodial sentence recognizes the seriousness of that harm and reinforces that antisemitic hate crimes must carry meaningful consequences. Amid rising antisemitism, Jewish Canadians need to know that those who target them will be held accountable. We renew our call for provincial and territorial governments to establish dedicated hate-crime prosecution units across Canada, with the expertise and resources to pursue these cases effectively. Leaders at every level of government must take concrete action to combat antisemitism and protect Jewish communities.

Ahead of BC’s October 24 provincial election, B’nai Brith Canada has written to party leaders and sent them our election questionnaire, calling for concrete action to combat antisemitism and protect Jewish British Columbians. Canada is in the midst of a crisis of antisemitism. Our 2025 Annual Audit of Antisemitic Incidents in Canada documented 847 incidents in BC and 6,800 nationwide. In BC, that is a 250% increase compared to 242 incidents in 2022. We have asked parties how, if given the opportunity to form government, they will: 1) Protect Jewish communities in BC, including by increasing security funding, establishing a dedicated hate-crime prosecution unit, and exploring armed security provided by trained and licensed professionals at vulnerable institutions; 2) Combat antisemitism in schools and post-secondary institutions, ensuring Jewish students can learn safely and that concerns about harassment, intimidation, and exclusion are addressed; and 3) Formally adopt and implement the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance ("IHRA") working definition of antisemitism across provincial policies and programs, including through student education and mandatory antisemitism training for public servants. The responses we receive will be published on our social media platforms so voters can see where parties stand on these crucial issues for our communities. Read our questionnaire below. Make sure your voice is heard at the ballot box.

We are waiting for more details on the tragedy today at the Tsawwassen First Nation Truth and Reconciliation event. My thoughts are with those who are injured and with everyone who is waiting for news of their friends and family. Paramedics and first responders were immediately on the scene and right now, the Nation continues to ask the public to avoid the area.  This is especially traumatic for people on a day like today - please know that there is help available. The KUU-US Crisis Line 1-800-588-8717 and VictimLink 1-800-563-0808  are available any time, any day, to get connected to support.

I was there with Irwin & completely agree with him. It was a prelude to the terrorist attacks of September 11th. It was infused with support for violence & used antisemitic imagery to attack Jews. Durban was the crucible of modern antisemitism & we should stay far away from it.
The #UN is convening today to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the World Conference Against Racism in #Durban. When it was first announced in the late nineties that this conference was to take place, I greeted it with anticipation and excitement. This was to be the first International Human Rights Conference of the 21 century whose organizing theme was anti-racism. As one who was a parliamentary member of the Canadian Delegation at the time, Durban’s cacophony of hate and drumbeat of evil has indelibly imprinted itself not only on my memory, but on my being. Canada, and the Community of Democracies, should not participate, and thereby legitimate, this legacy of hate. On the contrary, Durban’s legacy of hate must be unmasked, exposed and combatted.
