No, this isn't it. I have been an artist in fandom spaces for 15 years or so.
Here is how it really is:
The AO3 situation is bringing to the surface a problem weβve been sweeping under the rug for years: the double standards applied to fanfiction and fanart.
An artist can draw whatever they want and post it on social media, benefiting from algorithmic favoritism because their content is quick and easy to consume (because people scroll through social media in a matter of seconds. If something takes even one extra minute of their time, they wonβt bother)
They can make money, to the point of building an actual career out of commissions (is that legal? Who knowsβ¦ probably best not to look into it), and receive hundreds of comments or reposts because they deserve it and have worked hard to reach that level (absolutely true, and I agree. But so has anyone else who creates something. I didnβt learn how to sew cosplay costumes or write overnight. It took me just as much time and effort.)
A fanfiction writer doesnβt get that.
Social media platforms penalize:
- External links to websites like AO3.
- Walls of text (so no chapters published as posts)
- Certain words or phrases.
- Posts that donβt get immediately shared or commented on within the first few minutes after publication.
(I could go on, but you get the point.)
So, if we try to promote our work, weβre forced to commission artwork from artists (for a fee, see above) just to grab peopleβs attention with content thatβs quick and easy to consume.
If we dare to ask for comments or any kind of feedback (completely free and anonymous), we get insulted because βwell, I donβt want to be OBLIGED to say what I think, or to give a like/kudos/heart/smoke signal or crop circle to that idiot who spent sleepless nights in front of a computer.β
And if we ever dared to ask for even a single euro for our work (which nobody does, because we already know how that would end), just imagine the diplomatic incident that would cause.
So why bother? And donβt come at me with the joy of creating. Iβve been writing novels on my computer for 25 years, and Iβm perfectly happy leaving them right where they are rather than sharing them for free with ungrateful people.
This whole situation is bringing one thing into focus: when all is said and done, AI isnβt really the problem.
Learned about the Anne Rice incident, that's fucking wild and put a bit more perspective to me on the divide. I'm in a fandom where fanfic and fanart is encouraged (with some rules) so I've seen plenty of writers make some cash on their writing and see that as more normalised
Why are writers getting mad at fanartists cuz we do comms, y'all can do comms too?? I thought you knew that, you just can't advertise them on ao3. You can make patreon accs, I'm subbed to writers to get early access to chapter updates why is it our fault you're not doing that
Like I saw someone yelling about how artists will never understand what it's like to write and as an artist AND a writer, both forms are difficult creative processes and are fantastic when they band together. Quit trying to create war between the two ugh

Finally finished a doodle comic of my mascot OC, Ace, meeting @ashanpan demon! Jimin :3
Ace is very intimidating but I promise they are sweet! π₯Ί
I just remembered I never posted my Halloween costume here π last year I was Reaper Tae, this year I was Reaper Ash πβ¨
Had a dream I was back in London for BTS concert only I was front row and Tae jumped down to the crowd, nodded at my lesbian flag and shook my hand. He laughed at how sweaty my palm was. Felt really real it was weird normally JK appears and punches me in the face in my BTS dreams

BTS WE FIGHT AS ONE
BTS WE FIGHT AS ONE
BTS WE FIGHT AS ONE
I'm slowly starting to learn about the sheer amount of people that joined this fandom that haven't watched things like Are You Sure, Run Jin, Suchwita, listened to the solo era albums and watched the MVs or even caught up on Run BTS

There is a difference between being a fan of BTS and being part of ARMY. Lately those terms seem to be getting a bit blurred.
Anyone can discover BTS at any time and every ARMY matters - whether you have been here since debut or found them yesterday. There is no correct time to become part of this community. BTS finds you when you need them. But ARMY works hard.
ARMY is more than just an audience at a show or a group of fans who just like BTS. We are a community with a history and a culture that WE developed over time. Kpop fandom culture in general has its own traditions which include collective participation and supporting their artists through working together with things like streaming and voting. BTS and ARMY started with those roots and built something unique of our own. We have our fandom etiquette and our standards of being an ARMY and its not the same as a fan of BTS. When people join the community they adapt within our identity through learning and respecting our historical roots and standards.
With the latest enormous influx of new fans we have also seen people arrive who donβt seem interested in understanding that culture. Some want to redefine what ARMY should be without understanding what made it what it is. Others bring attitudes and expectations from outside fandom spaces that donβt necessarily align with our values. Sometimes that goes beyond disrespecting the community - it disregards the very people who brought us together in the first place - BTS.
Our ARMY culture matters and has deep layers of why it is what it is. We support all seven members. We respect their privacy. We promote their work through voting and streaming - we look out for one another. We have our own jokes and ancient texts. We also understand that supporting BTS does not mean we engage in fanwars or get rage baited during important times. We have BTS Lockdown. We also dont tear down others or make everything a competition - we are one global ARMY. We are not a monolith. We see each other with respect as only ARMY. We work together globally - which is what set us apart from other fandoms.
We dont have to change our identity to fit what is popular outside our fandom or what other fans try to tell us our history was - we know who we are - we built it together. We dont have to adopt every trend or seek validation from other fan communities - we are enough. There are reasons our traditions and values developed the way they did - and we need to pass that on to baby ARMY.
New fans are always welcome. Nobody expects you to know everything the day you discover BTS - but there is something to be said for learning about the community you are joining rather than expecting it to conform to what youre used to.
Being ARMY is not just about what you get out of it - its also about what you contribute to it.
We can grow and welcome new people and evolve as a community without losing the values that made ARMY what it is. Its a place we can find peace and community with each other in a chaotic world that wants everyone divided.
Lets hold on tight to each other and focus on what we can achieve for the boys while remembering who we are. Fighting! π
