Much ado about welfare reform in today’s press … the no. of unemployed people per vacancy was 1.9 Sept to Nov 2024, up by 0.2 from 1.7 in previous quarter. If @ONS broke vacancy stats down by region and factored for level of skills required, ratio would be worse in many places.

In Belarus this week someone told me “There's no alternative to Alexander Lukashenko as leader of our country.” Who said that? One of the candidates who’s been allowed to run against Lukashenko in the election. Our report from Minsk. Producer @LizaShuvalova Cam. @AntonChicherov

Human failings which first took their toll on neighbouring communities in the DRC and Rwanda >30 years ago have given rise to the tragedy now gripping North Kivu and its environs. That we haven’t pivoted from the extractivism which underpins such horror in the interim is shameful

This exoskeleton could one day help children with neurological damage to walk again. Cosmo Robotics hopes to provide better health benefits and emotional benefits to their clients, so they no longer need to be restricted to a wheelchair. #CES #CES2025 #ExoskeletonTech

Typically poor reporting of social care ‘challenge’ - which is testament to why it is never ‘resolved’: 50-60% of adult social care spend by local govt is currently geared towards people of working age with a disability - of which, >1/3 are deemed to be living in poverty.

I’ve now completed exhaustive analysis* of the first 6,800 comments here and can reveal that the public’s preferred metaphor for the new #socialcare commission is ‘kicking the can down the road’, outscoring ‘booting it into the long grass’ by a 2-1 margin. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c791…

It's remarkable that the Darzi Report into the NHS was done in 9 weeks and yet the review into social care is going to take 3 years. The govt can't achieve a shift from hospital to community without tackling social care and ensuring patients are discharged to the right places.

The UK government has announced (another) commission to look at social care today. Sector leaders have made plain their concerns about associated timescales and what is liable to happen - get worse - in the interim. But, I think a few things are noteworthy in the circumstances …
