Disaster Prevention Department urges public to prepare 72-hour emergency bags The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) on 2 November urged the public to prepare emergency bags containing essential supplies to help them survive for 72 hours in the event of disasters or other emergencies, stressing the message: “Be aware, but don’t panic.” DDPM Director-General Nirat Phongsitthithavorn said the recommendation follows calls in several countries for people to stock up on food, medical supplies and other essentials amid concerns over the Middle East conflict. Although Thailand is not among the countries advised to prepare for such a situation, having an emergency bag is a basic precaution that DDPM has long encouraged. The 72-hour period is an internationally recognised preparedness standard, covering the critical first three days after a disaster, when people may need to survive on their own while government assistance is being mobilised.
