But they were still made and have been embarrassingly wrong. From a “peer-reviewed” perspective, the CMIP5 and CMIP6 models generally show that the first September (the month with the Northern Hemispheric sea ice minimum) with “ice-free” conditions in the Arctic (i.e., the monthly mean sea ice extent falls below 1 million km²) will occur in the 2040s, perhaps as soon as the mid-to-late 2030s. 🔗nature.com/articles/s41467-0… But, if I had to make an educated guess, I would say that those ice-out dates probably won't materialize either. Time will tell. These predictions of doom do far more to undermine the public's trust in science than build it.
