Alpies

Thank you, Cova. Thank you, Four.meme. 🐱🤝 @covachong @fourdotmemezh

Cat season is here. Once, cats were simply a species. Then they became one of the internet’s most enduring vessels for emotion. They share no single image, yet embody the same mixture of cuteness, absurdity, intimacy, and rebellion. There are countless cats in the world, but over the past few years, the Chinese internet has given them a shared name: Hajimi. “Hajimi” began as a sound heard anew. It was rewritten by the public as a name for cats, then expanded beyond cats to encompass everything cute, abstract, or difficult to name precisely. Every mishearing and remix surrounding it did not weaken the word. Instead, they freed it from its original meaning and turned it into one of Gen Z’s most recognizable shared languages. People did not first understand Hajimi and then begin to use it. Hajimi acquired its meaning through the very act of being used, again and again. When a word has only one meaning, it is merely a word. When countless people can place their own understanding inside it, it becomes culture. Culture often works this way: first it is needed, and only later is it explained. This is the deepest source of a Meme’s vitality. It does not endure by remaining singular, but finds consensus through endless reinterpretation. The more a symbol is interpreted, the less it belongs to any one person—and the more it belongs to an entire era. This is why everything is Hajimi. And now, time is about to accelerate.
