It was a pleasure joining @IainDale on @LBC to discuss Binyamin Netanyahu and the political situation in Israel ahead of the election.
I told Iain:
"Netanyahu has fallen to an all-time low as a statesman, but he remains a supreme politician. The problem is, Israel doesn't need politicians right now. It needs someone with vision. Netanyahu offers nothing of the sort.
The opposition has a clear, compelling rallying cry: Netanyahu failed catastrophically on October 7. He was warned repeatedly about an impending attack and ignored every warning. Those responsible in the IDF and the intelligence community have taken responsibility except Netanyahu himself. He has to carry the can. On top of that, he deliberately delayed deals to bring Israel's hostages home from Gaza.
There is overwhelming public demand for a State Commission of Inquiry into October 7. The current government is doing everything in its power to prevent it."
I have never seen a turnout like this at an election in Israel. According to the electoral authorities, it is the highest turnout in an Israeli election since 1977.ย There are fascinating parallels here with the election in Serbia which took place on Sunday where the unusually high voter participation helped the opposition to victory.
There are other parallels. A key factor in the defeat of Serbian strongman Aleksandar Vucic was his growing corruption and authoritarianism. ย The deaths of sixteen people in November 2024 following the collapse of a railway canopy at Novi Sad railway station, ignited a groundswell of anger against the Serbian authorities.
The anger in Israel is palpable in the wake of the Netanyahu governmentโs divisiveness, its aggressive campaign to eviscerate the country's gatekeepers and its determination to evade responsibility for the worst terrorist attack in Israelโs history.
The parallel with Serbia has its limitations, of course. Unlike Serbia, Israelโs opposition is made up of seasoned politicians, but none as clever or as ruthless as the current Prime Minister.
The opposition group that routed Vucic ย is a leaderless movement but its rallying cry resonatedย with the wider public.ย It will be intriguing to see whether we see something similar unfolding in Israel.

If Netanyahu squeezes through and is able to form a government along the lines of the previous one, Israelโs democracy will be shot. Bibi will be able to claim that the Israeli public has spoken. The government sought to lay waste to Israelโs gatekeepers. The attorney general, Gali Baharav-Miara, was a thorn in the side of the Netanyahu government. She will be fired if Netanyahu has his way. The IDF Chief of Staff, Eyal Zamir, will receive similar treatment if he stands in his way.
The opposition parties have little in common, but they seek healing, accountability, the rebuilding of Israeli society and an end to polarization. Israel does not need another slick operator obsessed with advancing his own personal interests. For Israelโs sake, one has to hope that the message of renewal finally gets through.

The right-wing opposition leader @AvigdorLiberman has appealed to Israel's Attorney General to open a criminal investigation against Benjamin Netanyahu on charges of treason. Liberman claims the Prime Minister is trying to drag Israel into a military confrontation with Iran on the eve of the election simply to delay the vote and risk the lives of soldiers. Opposition leader @yairlapid has issued similar criticisms.
Suddenly, war is objectionable because it threatens an election. But where were Lapid and Liberman when Netanyahu launched his ill-conceived war against Iran alongside Trump in February? Liberman, in particular, has spent years acting as one of the loudest cheerleaders for unrestrained military force against Tehran.
The 2026 war has likely strengthened internal support inside Iran for a nuclear breakout. Strikes can destroy centrifuges, but they exacerbate the political conditions that previously constrained nuclear ambitions, resulting in a far higher long-term proliferation risk.
If Netanyahu finally falls, any incoming government must confront the Israeli public with a hard truth: military force has strict limits and the obsession with raw military power has severely eroded Israelโs international standing. @YairGolan1 has consistently pointed out to Israelis that military achievements must be translated into stable diplomatic achievements. This must be the way forward.

The Trump administrationโs attempt to back strongmen abroad keeps backfiring. He failed in Hungary, he messed up in Canada and now Lula is having the last laugh in Brazil.
Yet Trump never learns. He has given yet another endorsement to Israel's Netanyahu. Israel is undoubtedly a unique case given Trumpโs lingering popularity among parts of the electorate. Yet the underlying logic is entirely flawed: why would voters who have abandoned Netanyahu over his catastrophic failures of leadership reverse course simply because of support from an increasingly unpopular and discredited president?
That the U.S. president is trying to get Bibi off the hook at the exact moment he should face full public scrutiny speaks volumes about the sheer desperation driving his campaign and Trump's disdain for Israel's democratic process.

"Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fighting for political survival in Tuesday's elections has pleaded with President Trump in recent days to show more public support for his campaign.

This is Israel's prime minister. If he is this hysterical, one would like to think he knows something the rest of us don't about his polling numbers. One can only hope.

Yes, but there is essentially no difference between Ben Gvir & Smotrich and the governing Likud party led by Netanyahu who appointed them to positions of power in the first place. @YairGolan1 is spot on when he says that the Likud is a party of extremists.
I said I wasnโt going to weigh in on who should be prime minister of Israel as that is a decision for Israeli citizens. I did, however, want to share one point of view from the perspective of someone who has an understanding of how Israel is perceived in America.
Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich have caused Israel enormous reputational damage with their statements and actions which are presented in the global media as representing the voice and will of all Israelis.
As such, a government formed without Ben-Gvir and Smotrich will send a message to the rest of the world that Israel is turning a new page.
This will allow Israel to rebuild lost credibility, increase the opportunity for an expansion of the Abraham Accords, and enjoy a better relationship with Democrats and Republicans and Americans at large.
The Trump administrationโs interventions in recent foreign elections have backfired badly. Israel may be a unique case because Trump remains popular among its people, but it is highly unlikely that voters who have abandoned Netanyahu will switch back on the basis of an American endorsement. That the U.S. President is trying to get Bibi off the hook at the very moment he should face full scrutiny speaks volumes.
Moreover, Trumpโs backing raises obvious questions over what he demands in return. Lest we forget, he had grown increasingly frustrated with Netanyahu, calling him โcrazyโ back in June.
There is no such thing as a free lunch. Trump has made it clear what he wants: his war with Iran has become deeply unpopular back home, so why not get Bibi to do the dirty work for him? After all, Bibi will gladly oblige.

Israel Needs Healing and Accountability, Not a Life Raft for Netanyahu.
Bibi views Iran as an issue that plays to his strengths, diverting public attention from his failures of leadership in the wake of October 7. It is a desperate attempt to stave off defeat in next weekโs pivotal election.
Netanyahu was briefly buoyed by President Trumpโs endorsement, calling him โby far the greatest friend Israel has ever had.โ
In fact, the opposite is true: Trump may be Netanyahu's best friend, but he has been disastrous for Israel. His intervention speaks volumes about his callous disregard for Israelโs democratic process when its people are crying out for accountability.
Just as he meddled in Ukraineโs domestic affairs by calling on President Zelenskyy to resign, Trump displays the same contempt for democratic processes in Israel.
