The BBC has announced it will turn off @BBCRadio4 Long Wave on 27th June. This will mark the end of our BBC as a national broadcaster, as vast areas of the UK will no longer be able to receive any BBC services (via FM,DAB,DVBT or internet) other than with a fixed satellite dish.

Beavers boost nature even more than was previously understood, a new study shows.
Beavers really are the keystone of all keystone species, and among the most powerful tools we have for breathing new life back into landscapes 🦫

"he and the forest, alone together"

He sits and thinks of the things they know
He and the Forest, alone together
The springs that come and the summers that go,
Autumn dew on bracken and heather,
The drip of the Forest beneath the snow…

Never seen this before. It's difficult to reconcile this painfully awkward, nervous statement with the consumate performer of 15 or so years later. #HaroldWilson
#OTD 1948. Harold Wilson emerges as a national figure as he announces his 'Bonfire of Controls' outlining how clothing rationing will be relaxed.
Rationing on suits, footwear, plastics and knitted bathing costumes abolished.
He admits that he “wishes” he could do more.

very little known that another machine exactly like this was owned by Chromatius Gov. of Rome in 3rd century, cost 200lb of gold to make, was smashed by St Stephen & St Polycarp as offensive to their God
We called it a tall tale for 2,000 years.
Cicero described a bronze machine by Archimedes that modelled the movements of the sun, moon and planets.
Nobody took it literally.
In 1901 divers recovered exactly that kind of device from a shipwreck off Antikythera. 30 bronze gears, cut by hand.
What else in the ancient texts are we dismissing?

Psst… did you know you can adopt an animal at Vale? 🦔
We've got a little confession to make…
We've been so busy caring for sick, injured and orphaned wildlife that we haven't done a particularly good job of shouting about something rather special!
You can adopt an animal at Vale Wildlife Hospital! 🥰
And with Christmas just around the corner, we think they make rather wonderful gifts!
Choose from six of our much-loved British wildlife species: 🦊 Fox, 🦡 Badger, 🦔 Hedgehog, 🦉 Owl, 🦢 Swan or 🦌 Deer.
Each adoption comes with a gorgeous cuddly toy, a personalised adoption certificate, a species fact sheet, patient information and more!
Your adoption helps real wild animals get a second chance at life, every body wins, right?!
So whether you're looking for a thoughtful Christmas present, a gift for a wildlife-loving friend, or simply fancy treating yourself (we won't judge!), why not give a gift that really does make a difference?

not just the wages it's the ridiculous pointless stress of making anyone try to do two hours of tasks in one

SUPER excited to share that my 2027 Bee Calendar is now available for sale ✨
This is a limited edition calendar with 12 of my highest definition bee photos, all taken this year.
Each photo is labelled with the scientific name, the English name, and the sex of the insect pictured.
I’m hoping this will act as a resource for people to learn to recognise some bee species and appreciate the amazing diversity of insects that exist. 🌿🐝

Why don't farmers join the chorus of support for lynx reintroduction in Britain?
A return of lynx would be a big win for most farmers.
For arable farmers, deer control is much needed. Lynx would save a fortune in avoided crop damage and unneeded deer fencing.
Dairy and beef farmers would have fewer badgers around, as well as fewer deer, thereby reducing wildlife-cattle TB transmission. (Lynx don't eat cows, obviously.)
Foresters would save money as a result of reduced deer pressure on young trees.
Sheep in open pasture are not targeted by lynx, which like to stay well hidden in woodland.
The only loser may be a handful of sheep kept in actual woodland, but in Britain we don't tend to farm sheep in this way, except perhaps in some straths in the Highlands of Scotland.
Farmers really should get on board with lynx reintroduction!
Apart from anything, just imagine the unforgettable magic of actually glimpsing one. Which is of course why millions of Brits want Britain to join every other European country in restoring these beautiful secretive, harmless creatures to our landscapes where they belong.
