A direita hegemônica no país durante décadas foi a paulistana, tipicamente tucana, elitista e preconceituosa. Aí surgiu uma nova direita, mais típica dos subúrbios do Rio, com protagonismo de militares e pastores. E essa nova direita tem, obviamente, uma base mais popular. Ao mesmo tempo, o conservadorismo exacerbado e o grau de violência dela assustam uma classe média que já votou na direita em outras eleições, mas é escolarizada e democrática. Que não aceita discursos extremistas contra liberdades individuais.
O resumo é: a substituição de uma direita liderada por empresários, sobrenomes conhecidos, oligarcas, por uma direita de pastores e militares, afastou São Paulo.

If, by the way, the same situation that just happened in Brazil had happened but with the parties switched -- if Bolsonaro had won last night's election and then a pro-Bolsonaro judge sent the Federal Police to seize Lula's passport and bar him from leaving the country -- every major western media outlet and liberal NGOs would be screaming about the authoritarian attack on Brazil's elections and the destruction of basic freedoms.
