I keep being asked this. It illustrates how little we know of what meat production involves.
Farms breed only as many animals as they think they can sell. This is why herd numbers fluctuate every year. If demand drops, livestock numbers drop accordingly.

Zoos are not really analogous to prisons b/c prisons are places where humans who have committed crimes are confined. Nonhumans confined in zoos have done nothing wrong. They are more analogous to political prisoners who are confined not because of what they did but who they are.
This whole process is grim. Make a child raise an animal, bond with it, then kill it.
This may be how the real world works but it really doesn’t have to be anymore.
