Eric Hoffer wrote this article about Israel almost 60 years go. It reads like it was written yesterday.
"The Jews are a peculiar people: things permitted to other nations are forbidden to the Jews.
Other nations drive out thousands, even millions of people and there is no refugee problem. Russia did it, Poland and Czechoslovakia did it, Turkey threw out a million Greeks, and Algeria a million Frenchmen. Indonesia threw out heaven knows how many Chinese-and no one says a word about refugees. But in the case of Israel the displaced Arabs have become eternal refugees. Everyone insists that Israel must take back every single Arab. Arnold Toynbee calls the displacement of the Arabs an atrocity greater than any committed by the Nazis.
Other nations when victorious on the battlefield dictate peace terms. But when Israel is victorious it must sue for peace. Everyone expects the Jews to be the only real Christians in this world.
Other nations when they are defeated survive and recover but should Israel be defeated it would be destroyed. Had Nasser triumphed last June he would have wiped Israel off the map, and no one would have lifted a finger to save the Jews.
No commitment to the Jews by any government, including our own, is worth the paper it is written on. There is a cry of outrage all over the world when people die in Vietnam or when two Negroes are executed in Rhodesia. But when Hitler slaughtered Jews no one remonstrated with him.
The Swedes, who are ready to break of diplomatic relations with America because of what we do in Vietnam, did not let out a peep when Hitler was slaughtering Jews. They sent Hitler choice iron ore, and ball bearings, and serviced his troop trains to Norway.
The Jews are alone in the world. If Israel survives, it will be solely because of Jewish efforts. And Jewish resources. Yet at this moment Israel is our only reliable and unconditional ally. We can rely more on Israel than Israel can rely on us. And one has only to imagine what would have happened last summer had the Arabs and their Russian backers won the war to realize how vital the survival of Israel is to America and the West in general.
I have a premonition that will not leave me; as it goes with Israel so will it go with all of us. Should Israel perish the holocaust will be upon us."

Yes, the monarchy was deeply implicated in the slave trade. But not the British monarchy.
The biggest African slavers were not pirates or bandits. They were kings. In the 1750s, King Tegbesu of Dahomey, in present-day Benin, was reported to be making £250,000 a year from selling slaves. That astronomical sum, equivalent to perhaps £45 million today, was vastly more than any British aristocrat
While Tegbesu was trafficking human beings, the future George III, who had recently become Prince of Wales, was becoming a convinced abolitionist. He wrote a monograph arguing that “slavery is equaly [sic] repugnant to the Civil Law as to the Law of Nature”. He went on, as King, to sign the abolition of the slave trade into law in 1807.
That act prompted incredulous rage among West African chiefs.
In the 1840s, King Ghezo of Dahomey, played by John Boyega in the 2022 film, The Woman King, fiercely resisted such pressure.
“The slave trade is the ruling principle of my people. It is the source and the glory of their wealth,” he complained.
Contrast his attitude with that of his British fellow-monarchs. Although Victoria, as Queen, was expected to refrain from expressing political opinions, her husband was under less constraint. Albert made his very first speech as Prince Consort to the Society for the Extinction of the Slave Trade and for the Civilization of Africa. His words are a reminder of how determined Britain was to ensure that ending the Atlantic slave trade did not simply push the commerce eastwards.
“I deeply regret that the benevolent and persevering exertions of England to abolish that atrocious traffic in human beings (at once the desolation of Africa and the blackest stain upon civilized Europe) have not as yet led to any satisfactory conclusion. But I sincerely trust that this great country will not relax in its efforts until it has finally, and for ever, put an end to a state of things so repugnant.”
The difference between the British Crown and contemporary African monarchies can be glimpsed in the story of Aina, a young Yoruba girl owned by King Ghezo of Dahomey.
In 1850, a naval captain called Frederick Forbes came to Dahomey to try to convince Ghezo to stop selling slaves. He was unsuccessful but, during his visit, he was offered Aina as a gift.
Forbes knew that such slaves were generally destined for human sacrifice, so he accepted the child, naming her Sara Forbes Bonetta. When Sara arrived in Britain, Queen Victoria became her godmother, paid for her education and arranged for her to marry a wealthy Yoruba businessman. Are the British really the baddies here?
Critics talk of telling our nation’s story “warts and all”; but they rarely get around to the “and all”. The “and all” surely includes the vast sums devoted to stamping out slavery, calculated by Chaim Kaufmann and Robert Pape as 1.8 per cent annually of GDP between 1808 and 1867, the most expensive moral foreign policy in human history. Even if there were a case for reparations in principle (which there is not) that sum alone – not counting the billions given in aid – would surely have covered any debt.
What we are seeing is not a debate about history, but an argument about contemporary politics. Critics want to convince us that Britain became rich through exploitation rather than, as was actually the case, through private property, free contracts and independent courts.
The easiest way to demonstrate the negative correlation between capitalism and slavery is to look at the places where human bondage is most prevalent today – in order, North Korea, Eritrea, Burundi, the Central African Republic and Mauritania. If William III owning shares in the Royal African Company bothers you more than the continuing abomination of slavery in those places, you need to ask yourself some hard questions about your motives.

Archaeologists excavating ancient Egypt uncovered one of the most important confirmations of the Bible ever found: a victory monument from Pharaoh Merneptah that mentions Israel by name—for the very first time in recorded history.
After the death of Joshua, the Bible says Israel entered a chaotic period. The tribes were scattered, leaderless, and repeatedly attacked by foreign enemies (Judges 2:10-15). One of those enemies was Egypt.
In 1208 BC, Pharaoh Merneptah, son of Ramses II, launched a military campaign into Canaan. To commemorate his victories, he erected a stone monument-now known as the Merneptah Stele.
And carved into that stone are these words:
"Plundered is Canaan...Ashkelon is carried off, Gezer is seized, Yanoam is made non-existent; Israel is laid waste—its seed is no more."
This single line is explosive. Why? Because archaeology confirms exactly what the Bible describes!
Excavators discovered: Israel is listed separately from Canaan, proving Israel was a distinct people—not Canaanites.
• The word "Israel" is written in masculine form, which in ancient Egyptian grammar means a people, not a city or territory
• The cities listed (Ashkelon, Gezer, Yanoam) are feminine-standard for city-states. This proves Israel had no centralized capital yet, matching the
biblical period of the Judges.
In other words, Israel existed as a recognizable people in Canaan before kings, before Jerusalem, before a monarchy—exactly as Scripture says.
The date of the stele-1208 BC-places Israel in the land shortly after Joshua's death, confirming:
•The conquest had already begun
• The tribes were settled primarily in the hill country
•Egypt's chariots could not reach them there

THE BBC’S ANTISEMITISM SCANDAL IS A DISGRACE.
The BBC has reportedly agreed to pay £400,000 to Jewish Oscar-winning producer Lucie Kon, who says she was bullied, marginalised and pushed out after speaking up against antisemitism.
After 22 years at the BBC, she alleges colleagues called Zionists “evil”, questioned her description of Hamas as terrorists and considered her too biased to cover October 7 simply because she was Jewish.
Think about that. A Jewish journalist allegedly deemed unfit to report on the massacre of Jews because she was Jewish.
She complained. Her grievance was rejected. She lost her job. The BBC settled without admitting liability.
And who helps foot the bill? The British licence-fee payer.
An organisation that lectures the world about impartiality, diversity and human rights now faces deeply disturbing allegations about its treatment of its own Jewish employees.
The BBC doesn’t just have a credibility problem. It has serious questions to answer about antisemitism within its own walls.
