I'm thrilled to be launching Econvitals today. It's been the main way in which I have been tracking and understanding the economy over the last several months. And I decided I might as well share it with all of you--for free. Has a combo of website, email lists & social media.

Happy 4th of July everyone. I came here as a kid at 9 years old, not knowing a single word of english, lived on food stamps in section 8 housing. My parents cleaned houses while my sister and I collected cans for recycling. Our clothing was all donated and our furniture was things we found on the curb (here I am in front of our "tv set", the broken one being used as a stand for the little working b/w one). But this country gave us an opportunity--to learn, to work hard and earn something for it. "Grateful" does not begin to cover it. I owe this country and its people everything I have. Thank you America, happy 250 to the idea.
bets still on the table America, yet.

This is a fantastic and rare (!) example of authors of a published paper and the author of a comment on that paper working together to fix the scientific record. Kudos to all involved. This is not easy, even with good faith all around. I hope to see the AER follow suit before too long. @davidroodman @AEAJournals @I4Replication
🚨 CORRIGENDUM ALERT 🚨 A decade after Star Wars: The Empirics Strike Back was published in AEJ: Applied, we've just published an official corrigendum with the AEA. This is a love story. 🧵

Dear followers, after witnessing the deterioration of Twitter/X, I have just created an account on Bluesky. My handle there is @DAcemogluMIT.bsky.social I might try to post a few things on both platforms for a while, but I'm hoping to slowly transition to Bluesky over time.

Listen up folks: By “Major Biden tax hikes” I mean “significant” or “consequential” — not that Major Biden, who is a dog rather than a tax collector, will be deciding tax rates

Hard agree. It's shameful how the vaxx registration has rolled out. However...failures in gov IT prevent people from accessing critical gov services EVERY DAY (e.g. SNAP, unemployment). The "scandal" isn't that this happened with vaxx rollout. The scandal is that it's so common.
The federal government learned a lot from the HealthCare.gov fiasco. State governments (and DC) — not so much. It's been obvious for a year we were going to need vaccine sign-up sites that worked. It's a scandal that so little was done, and so many are failing.

Interesting back-and-forth going on about the Romney child allowance proposal and its employment effects: in particular Scott Winship’s AEI post worries that income effects will reduce labor supply among low-income families. Time for some tax theory... 1/n aei.org/poverty-studies/the-…

What matters is the sum of these two effects. So, Lesson 2: if you have an internality-offsetting EITC (Lesson 1!) these two things sum to ~0, so there is no distortion from an income transfer, *even if there is an income effect on labor supply*. 10/n

Upshot: if we take this behavioral model seriously, it’s a strong argument for an expanded and more consistent EITC. But I don’t think it supports Winship’s worries about *income effects*. Indeed, the EITC complements a Romney-style allowance. n/n
