10/30 - Someone on the radio in a movie
Straight Talk (1992) - Dir Barnet Kellman
Dolly Parton as Shirlee Kenyon
Every time I see one of these posts I am reminded of my favorite joke that always goes over with the bros, something like
two men are sitting in a diner, one in his 20s and the other in his 70s. The older man can tell the younger man is really upset and asks "are you ok son? You seem to be having a real tough time" and the younger man says "well, I just got off the phone with my girlfriend. We've been together for a few years now and she's really putting the pressure on about wanting to get married and start a family, but my folks got divorced when I was a kid and marriage just seems so scary to me. But I love her so much and I don't want to lose her. Are you married sir?" and the older man says "I am, in fact my wife and I recently celebrated our 50th anniversary."
So the younger man says "that's amazing, I'd love that to be us. Do you mind me asking how did you know she was THE ONE?"
The older man tells him "its actually a funny story, when I was your age I was a bit of a playboy, always going out with different women every night and it was pretty routine for me to have 2 or 3 steady girlfriends at a time. But a lot of my friends were settling down and starting families and I started thinking about how I wanted that for myself. The problem was I was seeing 3 different women at the time, and every one of them was someone I could really see building a life and a future with. All 3 were smart and funny and beautiful and I always had a great time with each of them. So I decided I'd give each one $100, that was a lot of money back then!, and tell them to do whatever they wanted with it and I figured I'd get a good idea of what kind of wife and mother they would be by how they spent it.
So I gave the first girl I had been seeing the money and told her to do whatever she wanted and she said "well I tell you what I'm going to do with it, I'm going to go to the beauty parlor and get all done up, buy a new dress, and take you out on the town tonight. We'll go to your favorite restaurant and then out to a nightclub and you can make all the other fellas jealous!" And she really did look like a movie star, I was so proud to be seen with her on my arm and I thought what a fun time we would have as a couple.
Well then the next day I see the second woman I'd been seeing and tell her the same thing, and she thinks for a minute and says "well, I'd hate to spend all that money on myself. If its ok I'd like to give it to my brother, you know he and his family have really been going through some hard times. He was in that awful car wreck and had to be in the hospital for weeks. They've got a lot of bills piled up from that and this would really help him and his wife out so much, is it ok if I give to them?" and I thought what a kind and generous person she was, if she was that thoughtful to her brother and his family how much more would she be with ours.
Well then I see the third woman, and I give her the money and tell her the same thing. She thinks for a bit and says "I'm going to take this down to the bank and buy a savings bond with it. I don't really need anything right now but you never know what the future holds and it would be a good idea for us to start thinking about the future, this would be a good way to start." And I thought what a smart and practical woman, she'd make such a fantastic wife and mother, someone I know I could trust to make good decisions for our family."
The young man looks at him and says "wow, all that must have made it an even tougher decision. How did you decide?"
And the older man says "I picked the one with the biggest boobs."
I'm going to forget I saw this, and then next football season I will see the commercials for this and be like "oh dang they actually did that?" and then forget all about it and then for the next 20 years every football season I will be like "dang that's still going?"
wow never thought of it like that man really something to think about haha oh yeah wow thats crazy man haha can't believe that haha you know how it is though right haha yeah oh wow hey anyway good to see you lets get the girls and go to dinner sometime yeah haha great to see you
All of the mailers I get from Republicans are dated boilerplate “cut taxes!” indistinguishable junk, meanwhile Doug! signs are popping up everywhere in the suburbs. Just once send out a mailer with a few mug shots of multi time deported illegals that raped and/or killed someone (plenty to choose from!) with “do you want this for Alabama?”
Thought about this again this morning, literally the only professor's name I remember from college was the one who understood this and challenged me to do better. Most of my classes had no attendance policy and grades were based on nothing but the midterm and final (I double majored in history and philosophy, I am completely useless) so for an entire quarter I would show up for the first class to get the syllabus and then take the midterm and final and never show up for any of the lectures bc it was all based on the readings. But Professor Wahl had attendance policies for her 100 level courses and I wound up in a few of them, once I moved on to the higher level courses I took more of hers bc I actually liked her and found the lectures interesting. BUT she didn't have attendance policies for those classes AND she would have a test prep class before each test so the first upper level class I took from her I fell right back into only coming for the bare minimum necessary classes and she called me out on it after I skipped all the lectures for a test and still got an A. She point blank told me "I know you can coast because you are smart, you've taken enough of my classes to show me that. But I felt obligated to give you an A on this bc you regurgitated the text enough to "get the right answer" and that would be enough for most of the class, but for you this is lazy work and you are better than this and if you don't show me some original thought and understanding on the next test I will fail you." And I was mad to start with (why is this good enough for half the class but not me?) but eventually I realized she was sincerely wanting me to do my best, so I started coming to class and engaging with the lectures and ultimately took every class of hers I could to the point I would say 75% of my philosophy classes were taught by her. Its so easy to get smart kids to do better, but so many fail
School was easy, especially once you realized the teacher didn't know anything outside of the textbook which they conveniently gave you a copy of to read on your own. They literally created a system where a smart kid was on the same level as the teacher and were shocked when those kids didn't respect it.
The Mrs is 9 years younger and the fact I can name all 50 states in alphabetical order is like a magic trick to her, she can't fathom how I was forced to memorize them as a 1st grader (there was a song!) and I can't fathom how she wasn't
#letterboxdfriday #lastfourwatched #spooktober Scream 7 is great because it has every "DON'T GO OUT THERE WTF ARE YOU DOING" cliche and I legit kept getting mad at it, real return to form!

Y'all worrying about Joel Osteen, meanwhile...
"The priest expressed particular disappointment because his parish has been helping Muslim refugees since 2015, providing housing assistance, German-language courses and support with administrative procedures."
A group of migrant teens disrupted a Catholic Mass in Vienna, Austria, repeatedly shouting the Islamic phrase “Allahu Akbar” while Christians were attending a religious service.
The parish priest, who has served the community for two decades, said: “I have never experienced anything like this. And I have been here for 20 years.”
He also revealed that another priest in a different Vienna district had reported similar disruptions occurring regularly at his church.

No police complaint was filed, and the church's exact location was withheld for security reasons.
