Or maybe I am overthinking it and have been burned by several kids who gave me a fistbump and then threw pens across my classroom…then tried to fistbump me on exit😂😂

Theres an underlying point which I didnt really make explicit: underthinking behaviour interactions in schools can, will and does lead to further issues with blurred boundaries. At best confused relationships at worst safeguarding problems.

Im not sure it does show caring. Caring is being a great teacher, great mentor and being there for them when they fail/fall. Caring is teaching them respect and boundaries and social norms. A fist bump can be just another virtue signal.

Yeah but mostly because handshakes are fraught with awkwardness between adults, let alone between an adult and a child😖

If your school’s behaviour management policy requires you to a) Be a child psychologist b) Stop everything to focus constantly on one child out of thirty c) Be telepathically intuitive and magically persuasive d) Accept rude or unsafe behaviour e) Stop and think hard about the exact, complex next step… Then it’s not a behaviour policy, but a misbehaviour policy, because it creates an environment where misbehaviour is more likely. It’s also a quit-switch for staff who are human beings, not sorcerers.

Unwise, unknowledgeable or…unconventional??!?😉

More and more convinced that the inclusion lead* in your school should just be the teaching and learning lead. Inclusive teaching is just excellent high-quality teaching. That’s 80%+ of your inclusion strategy. *assuming SENDCO is a different role.

Teach parents this and schools will have less problems: “Research finds children raised with an authoritative approach, combining warmth with clear boundaries, tend to achieve better academic results, have higher self-esteem and stronger social skills.” bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cv4g…

When kids struggle to meet academic standards, it can seem only fair to lower them--or make excuses. But that only perpetuates unfairness. Instead, let's harness cognitive science to enable more kids to MEET high standards. More in my new post: nataliewexler.substack.com/p…

When a teacher cedes their authority to their students, it isn’t the nice kids who take over. It’s the ones the nice kids are afraid of.
