Sumerian was easily the most useful thing I studied in school (not a joke). This influenced a lot about how I think about hard problems.
In my favorite panel at the Women in Sports Data symposium, each of the panelists described how she took an unusual path to sports. But after surveying the resumes of 200 current or former (W)NBA analytics staffers, I'm convinced there is really no such thing as the ~usual~ path.

Recently found this thought from @Nick_Sciria saved in my notes from years ago. I remember being immediately challenged when I read it. Hopefully it can serve as a good reminder for those currently leading teams!

The work Dave is doing here to attempt to quantify the *process* of shooting is fascinating. We still have so much to learn about one of the most fundamental skills in basketball.
Quantifying Shooting Mechanics: Learning is slow because of limits in technology, but that will steadily improve over time. I'm doing the best I can to quantify the things that are important to me as a shooting coach. Quantification is the first step to removing opinions.

Who would be interested in a Cleaning the Glass coding challenge? The idea: we'd detail a small project, each submission would be shared with current/former NBA staffers and get some constructive feedback from them. No prizes, but a great way to learn and get noticed by a team.
52%Yes, I'd love to do that

My goals with this: help people learn, help people maybe get hired, help teams find job candidates, and hopefully it will be fun. Any ideas anyone wants to add for things we could do to further these goals with this concept...I'm all ears!

I love that stuff. Coaching and teaching is fun. Deliver the information, empower and believe in your players. As a player, take the information and get right back after it. It comes together.

A few plays later the Suns run pick and roll again. Davis is the low man again. Look at where his early help is. Right there in position, ends up taking a charge. Daps all around.

Mike Brown immediately calls timeout and he lets Davis know where he should have been. But instead of a total back and forth *shows* him where he needed to be on the court. Stick with me.

Little things for the Kings defense, just have to build their help early. Davis is the low man his job is to help on the roll. In early but he sinks with the drive which opens the roll for Ayton. Stick with me.

2/ Football simulations feel obscure and niche-y but they are really just another symptom of some bigger issues - uncertainty, overconfidence, and the mixed blessing of models.

John Ross did a version of this course for the draft back in June and it was fantastic — great speakers, great students, great activities. This one looks just as good if not better.
Our Training Camp (w/ Season Option) Course starts September 28! We hope to see you there! 🏀 “Most basketball courses are too caught up in talking about “advice” & GITG instead put a premium on in depth analysis on the people & roles within a team.” - @JohnHartofilis @genzhoops
