My opinion piece on Nikkei Asia regarding the recent physical attack on Americans in North China, the handling of such cases by the PRC government including the judiciary, and how it might affect geopolitics.  asia.nikkei.com/Opinion/Atta…

In September 2019, Lantos Foundation president @LantosSwettK presented the Lantos Human Rights Prize medal to Hong Kong democracy activist Joshua Wong on the steps of the US Capitol. He had been awarded the Prize nearly a year earlier, but the Hong Kong authorities had seized his passport so he could not attend the ceremony in DC. In November 2020, barely a year later, Joshua was arrested in Hong Kong and began the start of what has stretched into nearly six years of unjust imprisonment, under the guise of Hong Kong’s tyrannical National Security Law. Today, Joshua was sentenced to an additional 10 years in prison, the only person to be prosecuted and convicted twice under the National Security Law. Joshua had just celebrated his 24th birthday when he went into prison. The CCP now wants to keep him behind bars until he is 40. Joshua Wong advocated courageously and peacefully for democracy and freedom in Hong Kong. He should never have been imprisoned at all, let alone for the decade this new sentence hands him. Yes, we call on the Hong Kong government to release Joshua, but this outrage demands more than advocacy; it demands action from the world’s democracies. We call on democratic leaders to tell Xi Jinping to free Joshua Wong now and to ensure that Beijing faces real consequences, e.g., restrictions on visas for Chinese students, if Hong Kong continues to imprison him unjustly.

On this day, in 1956 Hungary was invaded by a Soviet army to “liberate” Hungarian people. Soviet tanks crushed protestors who just wanted the freedom to choose their own future free from Moscow. So, Moscow decided to “liberate” them. Thousands were killed. Today, russia is doing the same in Ukraine.

Hong Kong democracy activist Joshua Wong has been sentenced to 10 years in prison on baseless national security charges. Wong has been in custody since November 2020, when he was 23, and faces imprisonment until late 2036, when he will be 40. To keep Hong Kong society subdued, the government appears to have adopted the tactic of stacking charges against influential pro-democracy leaders to ensure their prolonged detention. hrw.org/news/2026/11/05/hong…

November 3 should be named "Renee Good and Alex Pretti Day" in America.

Filled with jealousy of the Americans. The one time I was able to vote in adult life, at a democratic primary in Hong Kong in 2019, all candidates soon got arrested, simply because they wanted to be in the opposition.

The best way to defeat MAGA is to have America have a taste of MAGA policies.
This is what I wrote after the 2024 election in Project Syndicate: “By exposing ordinary Americans to the harsh consequences of MAGA policies – the elimination of essential health-care protections, the erosion of the minimum wage, tax cuts for the rich, and the rollback of environmental and workplace-safety regulations – Democrats could underscore Trump’s cruelty and recklessness. Without the Affordable Care Act (ACA, also known as Obamacare), which Republicans aim to repeal, working-class voters in red states who have benefited greatly from its insurance mandate may come to realize that the Democratic Party is more aligned with their interests.” yashenghuang.substack.com/p/…

Joshua Wong is one of the faces of Hong Kong’s new generation of democracy advocates. Detained since November 2020, he faces sentencing on 5 November. Please remember him. Don’t let him be forgotten. Photo: Studio Incendo / CC BY 2.0 (cropped) commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/F…

Turns out 6 million Swiss buy more stuff from the EU than 1.4 billion Chinese… So much for the PRC’s mighty consumer market.
Switzerland pulls further ahead of China as an EU export market. Switzerland’s lead increases from €20bn to an estimated €43bn. At some point, the discussion has to move from how much China could buy to how much it actually buys.

UPDATE: #JoshuaWong will be sentenced this Thursday (Nov. 5) after pleading guilty to foreign collusion. Imprisoned for nearly 6 years, he was due for release in Jan. 2027. Now, he could face 10 more years to life imprisonment if the court deems the offense “of a grave nature.”

You shall not look away from this.
I am in tears and speechless. The scream of this father over the body of his 15 y.o. daughter is the sound of pure torture. Another #russia attack on civilians. Mid day in #Chernihiv . These terrorist monsters have no soul. They will not stop until stopped.

Mbappé might lose Chinese sponsors, but it's the Chinese people who pay the greatest price for questioning the Party, and of the past: "When it comes to controlling thought and speech, the Chinese Communist Party will always play to win." hrw.org/news/2026/10/29/mbap…

One cannot say Chairman Mao is a dictator? What about the PRC constitution that starts by defining the country as "a socialist state under the people's democratic dictatorship led by the working class and based on the alliance of workers and peasants"?

The CCP gets upset when you call Mao Zedong a dictator. It does not want you to know that 60 years ago Mao launched the Cultural Revolution, one of the darkest chapters in China's history. Watch to learn what happened, and how the oppression and tyranny of that era still shapes the Chinese Communist Party today: youtu.be/WgxlL-A7UMI?si=0EH1…
