My favorite thing about wacky GOP antics from the Obama era is that every single thing your insane conservative uncle predicted at Thanksgiving 2011 came true.
- They ARE using your money for Abortions
- They ARE pushing the gay on Children
- The illegals/foreigners ARE stealing jobs
- New York City IS ruled by Islamo-Marxists
- The debt IS exclusively welfare fraud
She felt something similar at a concert bc concerts and music have an inherent religious aspect to them

I was the kid she’s describing. During freshman year the obvious conclusion occurred to me that school wasn't worth the effort. My teachers were nice people with warm platitudes, but they were also consumer-nihilists who had no clue. In English we read literature written for girls and in history we learned all about the evils committed by our ancestors. Class was mostly an exercise in rule-following and boredom management. The only reasonable response was to check out.
Only later did I discover, to my shock, that I liked good books, and that there were things worth pursuing, studying, knowing. So in my case (and I'm guessing I'm not alone), public schooling prevented the development of a love of learning.

“The way in which men think about the outer world determines, in the long run, the way in which they perceive it also. Indeed it very largely determines what they perceive.”
- Barfield, Israel and the Michael Impulse
A simple summary of Barfield’s work is that there is a direct relationship between what nameable and what is perceivable. Thus any change in language has a corresponding effect on perception, and vice versa.
Barfield’s definition of poetry is language which produces a “felt change in consciousness.” In other words, it is the use of names, either old or new, which modify the readers or listeners perception. For example, Shakespeare supposedly “invented” or popularized over 1700 English words, thereby producing new percepts, or phenomena.
In Saving the Appearances, Barfield follows Aristotle in splitting the world by into the actually phenomenal and the potentially phenomenal, with perception being the actualization of the potentially phenomenal. The kind of poetry performed by the likes of Shakespeare shifted the domain of the “potentially phenomenal” by providing new names. And with a shift in the potentially phenomenal comes a shift in the actually phenomenal—the perceived. It is by this process that the poet participates in ποίησις (poiesis), or “making.”
The work of the Inklings in general is a self-aware attempt at recovering this kind of ποίησις and protecting it from evil. The imagination lies at the heart of the Inklings due to its relation to the “potentially phenomenal” as opposed to the perceived. Using the imagination, Lewis and Tolkien in particular reshaped the public field of potential phenomena in the modern world, reintroducing angels, demons, and the spiritual world as a whole.
In ancient times, Germanic kings would give their subjects rings to win or keep their loyalty. A king who did this was hailed as the “ring-giver” (Old English: bēgġeofa) or “lord of the rings” (hringa þenġel). The closest equivalent today is me when I retweet my followers.

I literally can’t fathom a more degrading experience than a woman playing army man taking your bible.
No words needed.
