The funny thing is everyone was saying AI slop code will cause a cyber crisis but it’s actually all the old human slop causing it and the AI is just cleaning it up

Boomer wealth is going to be extracted from them entirely by the healthcare industry and their families will get nothing.
My coworker's mother passed away last November. She left her modest $190,000 house to him clear and free, no mortgage, completely paid off after thirty years of factory work. He moved into the home in January to finally settle the estate. Two weeks ago, a letter arrived from the state Medicaid estate recovery office. Because his mother spent four months in a rehabilitation facility before she passed, the state quietly slapped a retroactive $114,000 lien against the property title. He called the state health department, frantic, asking how a hospital stay could bankrupt an inherited home that had no mortgage balance. The caseworker sighed and told him: "Federal law requires state programs to claw back healthcare costs from deceased estates. The house cannot be sold or transferred until the balance is cleared in full." He offered to pay a monthly settlement. They said no. The full $114,000 is due in 60 days, or they foreclose on the property at a public auction. A lifetime of working-class savings, wiped out overnight by a retroactive healthcare lien. You don't own generational wealth. You're just holding a property title until the state finds a legal mechanism to repossess it the moment you die.

This op-ed can’t be real: “Students on University of California campuses may struggle with basic math, but they are graduating at record rates.” “What has made the University of California exceptional is its commitment to increase access without sacrificing excellence.”

i think its reasonable to oppose ai safety because you believe the people who are declaring themselves in charge of ai safety are misaligned and the last thing in the world you want is for them to be the architects of your future

AI-doomerism is following the Covid-Talibanism pattern, of the Smart set working each other up into a tizzy, a self-organizing and self-sustaining Smart Spiral. The ‘discourse’ has a life of its own that is largely independent of reality, and cooks up ‘solutions’ that primarily exist as and are justified by (sometimes literal) cartoons and similar fantasy constructions/thought experiments. Policy-proposals are rapidly generated and mimetically transferred that make no real attempt to touch reality let alone weigh costs/benefits (or when they do, one side of the ledger is conveniently marked up to Infinity to make the answer ‘obvious’), nor to speak about/contemplate real lives of real people. With AI-doomerism it’s currently still occurring and being fueled primarily Online (most normies still probably have no idea about any of this) but we now see more and more signs of its breaking containment, so I assume it’s only a matter of time before it has real effects (over and above the data-center thing) & generates top-down ‘measures’ that are totally retarded, unless this Smart Spiral is arrested and dissipated somehow. The pattern is too consistent to ignore. That this is simply how our ‘Smart’ class cooks up and spirals themselves into manias. It’s an egregore-genre your wealthy-enough (bored-enough?) and Internet-parallelized Smart Technocratic society will evidently just keep spontaneously producing, serially. Thus, as with Covid, to argue against them rationally with ‘facts and science’ is futile, because they just aren’t that kind of thing. They weren’t derived that way. Instead, to understand and reverse the dynamic you probably need the tools of ‘Elite Theory’, ethnography, sociology, Girardian analysis, new-religion (‘cult’) studies and so forth. As of now, it’s still basically coded Smart to talk about “p(doom)” and “alignment” with a straight face, and so Smart People will. It’s a way of signaling they’re on Team Smart, it allows virtually anyone to instantly and with little intellectual effort to Sign Up For Being Smart Too. People just love anything like that, particularly when there’s nothing all that noteworthy or all that smart about them. None of this is to say of course that there aren’t legitimate concerns about the risk of AI. (Just like, to identify and oppose Covid Talibanism wasn’t to deny the existence of the Wuhan Virus or that it could cause a deadly syndrome for some.) Just that the *manias* about these things have a way of being unmoored from their ostensible underlying realities, in a way that is transmitted socially rather than due to any ‘facts’. To combat AI-doomerism then, it just won’t work to make ‘arguments’ against it. You’re going to have to make it seem dumb and lame and retarded. You have to make fun of it and take it down socially, with ridicule, making it ‘uncool’, and similar tools. Good luck everyone.

Sweet neighbors our age moved in. Turns out I had the wife's number saved in my phone under the husband's name -- and vice versa. I had been texting him FOR A LONG TIME thinking I was texting her. Seemingly they communicate well as nothing got lost, playdates still happened, etc.

Just a couple weeks ago this poor man received 15+ pictures of different school uniform hand-me-downs with my commentary. I'm sure he's relieved for this to have been corrected.

Here’s my attenpt to explain what’s going on in Germany: - Competition from Eastern Europe severely weakened collective bargaining in the 1990s. The result was wage stagnation and higher inequality. (This gave rise to a temporary export boom, but it didn’t last). - Gerhard Schroeder’s Hartz IV reforms undermined the German welfare state and created a new category of precarious low paying jobs. - Angela Merkel’s debt brake led to massive austerity right after the global financial crisis. This was removed only for military spending. - Germany’s leading industry was always cars. But the industry made a bad bet on ICE cars instead of EVs, and is now getting killed by China. - German industry relied on cheap fossil fuel energy from Russia. We know how that worked out. And now the AfD is riding high and the SPD (which used to be the world’s most prominent left-wing party) is dead. And Merz is weak feckless. Do you disagree with any of this, @edenhofer_jacob?

Wait so in California a 17-year-old can drive a car but can't be a passenger in a Waymo by herself?

I would love to write a New Yorker-type article where I interview a handful of the retiree MV Hondius passengers’ children and describe what they do for work, their family status, and their rent.
