Scientists are using modern gene-mapping tools to breed tougher, more nutritious cowpeas. This could help the climate-resilient superfood produce much higher yields and boost global food security.

Another milestone!
My third PhD publication is now out in Legume Science
We reviewed genetic diversity and advances in genomic and phenomic tools for improving cowpea yield, quality, and stress resilience
Grateful to all collaborators!

Congratulations to @bibakinmade on successfully defending his PhD in Plant Breeding!
Habib has contributed through his research and publications, while also serving as a dedicated undergraduate mentor and an active leader in the @UFPlants.
Congratulations, Dr. Akinmade!

Meet Habib @bibakinmade, our Ph.D. Candidate and the latest feature in our Student Spotlight!
His research focuses on cowpea improvement using breeding, genetics, phenomics, and stakeholder input.
Get to know more about his research, motivation, and interests outside the lab.
Published 2 peer-reviewed research papers this year so far on cowpea.
As first author on crude protein and as a Co-author on heat tolerance. Grateful to my supervisor and all the collaborators!
Presented results from my research on the genetic control of resistance to Meloidogyne enterolobii in cowpea at the @SouthCoverCrops Conference in Gainesville.
Great talks, and I especially enjoyed the farmers panel and the field tour!
Field day yesterday transplanting red clover!
One thing I like about being in my lab is working across multiple crops like clovers, alfalfa, ryegrass, and cowpea (my focus).
That range teaches skills you can apply in any breeding program after PhD!!
Happy to have won the 2nd place for my oral presentation at the BIC/NAPIA Annual Meeting in Nebraska. I presented our work on Meloidogyne enterolobii resistance in cowpea.
Huge thanks to the organizers, my advisor, & UF Nematode Assay Lab led by @NematodeGuy, for the support!
Presenting today at the BIC & NAPIA Biennial Meeting in Lincoln, NE!
If you鈥檙e around, come listen in and let鈥檚 talk nematodes, resistance, and cowpea breeding!
Very happy to receive the William C. and Bertha M. Cornett Fellowship from @UFCALS.
Grateful to my supervisors for their guidance and support in my PhD journey.

Potatoes feed the world, but Florida鈥檚 heat makes it tough for current varieties.
We put a spotlight on our PhD Candidate @DklRakshya who is using genomic selection and crop modeling to breed heat-tolerant, climate-ready potatoes!

Florida鈥檚 muck soils trap phosphorus, which affects lettuce yields & shelf life.
Our PhD Candidate Jairo Arcos, is boosting phosphorus use efficiency (PUE) by transferring traits from tolerant lines to elite cultivars.
Less waste. More freshness.
Last week, our lab hosted the USDA-NIFA REEU students at UF. I gave a hands-on demo on how to make crosses in alfalfa, and Dr @ForageBreeding shared our research and gave a tour of the breeding facilities.
Thanks to @ziynetboz for coordinating this great program!
