Perturbed, to say the least.
All in. Every time. Julia Garner and Anthony Boyle star as Caroline Ellison and Sam Bankman-Fried in this limited series about the love scorned prodigies behind the FTX scandal. The Altruists premieres November 19.

The biggest cheese banks in Italy store 300,000+ wheels of Parmesan. Dairy farmers use cheese as collateral and get loans up to 80% of market value. At ~$1,000 per wheel, that’s $200m+ in loans (banks seize and sell cheese if farmer can’t pay back). Best part: banks use automated machines that brush and turn the cheese wheels everyday to keep them fresh. *** Vid link: youtu.be/QqqVnxw1GZk?si=tefH…
JUST IN: Extreme heat is threatening Italy’s “cheese banks,” where hundreds of thousands of Parmigiano-Reggiano wheels are stored as loan collateral.

The problem with casting for The Odyssey movie, for me at least, has nothing to do with race/gender, etc. What makes it painful to watch is that these are not classically trained actors performing in a period piece and it does not come off as some cool adaptation using poetic license. It feels disjointed like they are all from a different timeline. Maybe if Odysseus was from Boston, Matt Damon would have been a suitable choice. As a huge Greek Mythology geek, I thought the casting was awful. If I had one good thing to say about it, I thought they did a pretty great job with the score.

Tigers look orange to humans because we are trichromats, but they appear green to deer and wild boars because they are dichromats.

Has anyone read Lies My Teacher Told Me by James Loewen? It’s a very hard read in that, if you fact check anything, you will find it’s either lying or grossly misrepresenting the context of its arguments. Like, did you know, it claims that the concepts of public-meeting tradition, free speech, democracy, liberty, fraternity and equality are all thanks to Native Americans? Forget what you know about Ancient Rome and Greece or the Magna Carta. How is the book responsible for the brainwashing of so many people? It’s too easy to prove its falsehoods.

In the 800s, the Viking Ivar the Boneless, was responsible for conquering part of Northern England and expanding the map under Viking control. In 1066, Harald Hadrada failed to defeat William the Conqueror in England, thus ending the Viking Age. Which grand character can we expect Erling Haaland to emmulate this coming Saturday?

This winter Mamdani couldn’t clear the streets of New York from snow. This summer Mamdani can’t keep the city’s homes cool enough to avoid heat stroke. Communist Mayor, Communist weather.

On this day in 1895, the Supreme Court ruled income tax to be unconstitutional. The ruling was tragically superceded in 1913 by the passage of the 16th Amendment Could you imagine your life without income tax?

“I wish it need not have happened in my time,” said Frodo. “So do I,” said Gandalf, “and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” — J.R.R. Tolkien

I often think about the red-green alliance and how their intermediate goals are aligned, but their long term goals aren’t. I couldn’t really imagine what the Communist solution would be in the end to terminate their eventual opponent until I learned more about the Holodomor (the forced hunger-extermination of millions of people in Soviet (mostly Ukraine) states.) What’s to stop the elites from starving people to death to achieve their long term goals? Most of us would be pretty powerless in that fight. NB: I accidentally put this into Grok instead of a post at first and AI largely agreed with me. 🫠

It’s such an existential conundrum that we are supposed to embrace AI and robotics replacing humans knowing full well, at best, it depicts a version of Communism where motivation and purpose have been removed from the human experience and, at worst, it promises mutually assured destruction.
