Ciara Mageean 1992 - 2026 ποΈ
We are devastated to report that Ciara Mageean has died at the age of 34.
Last summer Mageean, who represented Ireland at two Olympics and stood on the podium at multiple major championships, revealed that she had cancer.
Her biggest victory came at the 2024 European Athletics Championships, where she secured the gold medal for Ireland in the 1500m.
A statement on her social media said: "At 6.30am this morning, Ciara lost her battle with cancer surrounded by her loved ones.
"A beloved daughter, sister, wife, friend and inspiration to so many, she will be deeply missed. Ar dheis DΓ© go raibh a hanam."

β€οΈ My beautiful boy deserves to be remembered with love, not hate. β€οΈ
Yesterday, a Coventry fan used a photograph of Bradley to taunt Sunderland supporters.
As Bradleyβs mam, this is heartbreaking, especially as itβs one of my favourite photographs of him. Just look at that smile.
I remember that day like it was yesterday. He was so happy, having so much fun. Those moments were precious because they were few and far between. So much of Bradleyβs short life was spent battling cancer and enduring treatments no child should ever face.
To see such a beautiful memory used in such a cruel way really does make my heart hurt. π
We are a football-loving family who follow Sunderland home and away. Iβm all for football banter, but surely mocking a child who died from cancer is not banter?
I hope the club takes appropriate action and the young ladβs family help him understand how hurtful his actions were. I donβt want hatred directed towards him, so please please don't, just for him to learn from this.
Behind that photograph is a little boy who was loved beyond measure and a family who miss him every day.
Thank you to everyone who has defended Bradley and shown us so much love. It means more than you know. β€οΈ
What some people donβt realise is that Bradleyβs story didnβt end when his life did.
Because of Bradley, childrenβs lives are being saved, hundreds of families have received vital support, and children facing unimaginable battles are being given hope.
Through Super Bradβs Pad, families can escape hospital life, spend precious time together and make memories that last forever.
That is Bradleyβs legacy. The difference my little boy continues to make in this world. No amount of cruelty will ever take that away.
So rather than let this photograph be remembered for hatred, I want it remembered for what it truly represents.
My beautiful little boy, enjoying one of the happiest days of his life, with the biggest smile on his face. π
That is how I want the world to remember him.

Today at the CBS Arena, as Coventry took on Sunderland, one Coventry fan decided to taunt Sunderland away fans with a picture of the late Bradley Lowery. Absolutely disgusting behaviour, and I really hope Coventry are able to find out who this lad is and ban him for life.
All for a bit of banter, taunt the Sunderland fans with a Newcastle badge, or the Nissan logo, but going as low as using young Bradley to try and get at the Sunderland fans is the lowest thing I think I have ever seen at a Premier League stadium.
This is absolutely disgusting, and this lad should be ashamed of himself.

On 4 October 1917, Private Arthur Hutt was fighting in Belgium during the First World War when every officer and NCO in his platoon became a casualty.
So the Coventry soldier took command himself.
Hutt ran forward alone towards an enemy position, shot the officer and three soldiers defending it and helped force between 40 and 50 German troops to surrender.
But he wasn't finished.
When his men later had to withdraw, Hutt stayed behind and covered them by firing at the enemy. He then carried a wounded soldier back to safety.
After reaching and securing his new position, he went back out under heavy fire and rescued another four wounded men.
His actions that day earned him the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry available to British and Commonwealth forces.
And Arthur wasn't some distant military figure with a loose connection to the city. He was a Coventry man, born here in 1889, who worked in the city's cycle industry before the war and returned to Coventry afterwards.
He survived the First World War and lived until 1954.
It's quite something to think that exactly 109 years ago today, while Coventry families were going about their lives back home, one of their own was in Belgium repeatedly risking his life to bring other men to safety.
How many of us knew Arthur Hutt's story? Coventry has so many people from its past whose names deserve to be remembered. β€οΈ
