I am in my 20th year of teaching full time and I have a Master's degree in secondary education. Public school works. It's where my three kids go and we have private options nearby. Public school...like almost everything else in education can be done well or poorly. Don't generalize.
I taught public school for 20 years and have a Masters degree in education I have one piece of advice: Homeschool your kids

For too long it’s been, praise the parents when kids are well-behaved, and blame the teacher when they aren’t.

"One study of..college students...found that they spent nearly 40% of class time scrolling social meda, checking email or watching videos on their laptops." Precisely why I have a phone ban in my classes. They can't concentrate with phones. It's also incredibly rude for students to be on phones during class. nytimes.com/2025/11/16/opini…

England has transformed its schools using ideas from US educators at exactly the same time the US has foundered (& ignored those ideas). Agree w this excellent @NickGibbUK piece (& honored to have earned a small mention). fordhaminstitute.org/nationa…

The best section of the Steplab documentary for me is minute 20 of episode 4. If you think PD is useless at your school, watch this. If you think what this school is doing is weird, that's because useless PD has been normalized and weird PD is weird because is hasn't been.

There is a two tier system of public education in American schools. One tier is the overwhelmingly majority of students who go to school day in and day and get zero rights to an organized, non-disruptive education. The other tier is the students with labels who have so many federal guarantees that they are allowed to hijack the education of anyone in their way without any recourse whatsoever.

Read books that interest you. Watch documentaries that interest you. Learn about things that interest you. This is how you feed passion. Too many kids have zero passion for anything meaningful. This is how dark ages in society emerge.

Why do other countries continue to out perform the 🇺🇸 in education? It has a lot to do with the fact that they value education and educators so much more than we do.

Decades of abandoning knowledge for "21st Century Skills" has produced a generation of kids that can't read, write, or reason but can make a Power Point or Canva slideshow with which to boringly read off with their back semi-turned to the class. You can't build anything lasting without memory. You can't think clearly about a world you don't know anything about.

Feedback is my baby. Use the feedback process with your teachers as a leader and with your students as a teacher. Meaningful and personalized discussions that ensure growth and learning and build relationships! Glad you love the book #personalize
Feedback is so important in a classroom, esp when doing personalized learning! My class uses “Photo Moments” within their learning maps to help build in teacher feedback time. Ss get a ✔️, SC (self correct), SG (small group), or WT (with teacher) to track progress! #MUEdD #MUSOE

This is about as clear an explanation as I've heard about why private school vouchers are unfair and will harm our society. Would you want your tax dollars going to some rich person so they could build a private driveway? #ksleg #ksed
It’s so sad he has to explain this to anyone. It’s starting to become scary now the ignorance we are dealing with this administration! It’s just a big ole bank robbery going right in front of us! @jamestalarico

Maslow Before Bloom: A Teacher’s Truth They tell us to teach, to inspire, to guide, To fill young minds with knowledge inside. “Bloom’s Taxonomy,” they say with pride, Higher-order thinking, let’s climb, let’s rise. But how can we teach if we stand on weak ground, When stress and exhaustion are circling ‘round? When sleep is too little, the workload too high, When no one sees the tears we cry? How can we nurture if we feel alone, If kindness and care are rarely shown? If safety is shaky, if respect isn’t there, If we walk through the halls with a burden to bear? Maslow whispers before Bloom can speak, A lesson for teachers, the strong and the weak. Before we can challenge, analyze, create, We need to feel valued, not just bear the weight. We need security, moments of rest, A culture that lifts us, not only tests. We need connection, a place to belong, Encouragement steady, compassion strong. So before we push students to think and to grow, Let’s check on the teachers—the ones in the know. For minds cannot bloom when hearts are unwell, Maslow before Bloom—it’s our story to tell.

Show AND Tell! New YouTube channel modeling explicit reading instruction!! As teachers, we’re expected to deliver explicit instruction, model skills, and provide corrective feedback for our students. Yet who is modelling effective practices for us?! Inspired by Zach Groshell’s book “Just Tell Them” about the power of explicit instruction and Angie Hanlin’s new book “It’s Possible”, an inspiring book highlighting the importance of strong leadership, science-based instruction and the power of building teacher knowledge and capacity, I’ve decided to start a new YouTube channel called: Show AND Tell! Show and Tell aims not only to tell teachers WHAT needs to be taught (ex. letter-sound correspondences, vocabulary, reading fluency) but also show teachers HOW it can be taught with a research-based approach! Once a week, I wil post a short lesson or instructional activity (usually less than 2 minutes) that SHOWS instruction of a specific element of the reading process (ex. Blending 2-phonemes) using specific, evidence-based instructional strategies (ex. Teacher-directed instruction with choral responses and immediate corrective feedback). Let’s get started! It’s time for our first #SORShowAndTell!!! youtube.com/shorts/jX3IISba0…
