Paul Nash (1889–1946): A key modern British artist who explored the mystical and symbolic "sense of place" in the English landscape. He enlisted in the Artists’ Rifles. A fall into a trench that broke a rib invalided him home just before most of his unit was wiped out at Passchendaele — an accident that probably saved his life. He then became an official war artist and wrote a famous letter to his wife describing the Western Front as a “frightful nightmare of a country more conceived by Dante or Poe than by nature,” declaring “I am no longer an artist… I am a messenger” who would bring back “a bitter truth.” His WWI paintings focus on shattered landscapes and trees rather than bodies. He served again in WWII despite chronic asthma.

PAINTERS OF LANDSCAPES – GREAT BRITAIN J.M.W. Turner (1775–1851) Turner transformed British landscape and marine art with his swirling atmospheres and dramatic skies.. At the 1832 Royal Academy Varnishing Days, Turner hung his cool-toned seascape Helvoetsluys next to Constable’s more colorful The Opening of Waterloo Bridge. While Constable worked on it, Turner added a small, vivid red daub to his own grey sea and left. He later refined it into a buoy. Constable famously remarked that Turner “has been here and fired a gun,” feeling the flash of red upstaged him.

John Constable (1776–1837): Famous for his affectionate, naturalistic depictions of the English countryside—particularly the Dedham Vale area along the River Stour. More admired in France (where The Hay Wain influenced the Barbizon painters and later Impressionists) than at home during his lifetime.

Richard Wilson (1713–1782): A Welsh-born master who pioneered classical, Italianate-influenced landscapes of British scenery. Wilson was less of a “colorful eccentric” in the Turner mould and more of a pioneering, somewhat cantankerous professional who helped elevate British landscape painting.

Before focusing on art, he spent about 20 years in science, earning two PhDs (in medicinal chemistry and pharmacy). He has described the shift as returning to something he always carried with him—drawing and color from childhood.

His work often emphasizes calming, light-filled scenes (forests, paths, cottages, rainy streets, autumn light) and he talks about neuro-aesthetics, color psychology, and creating pieces that feel restful in a space.
