Burros played an essential role during the settling and development of the West due to their steady, sure-footed nature. Today, we honor that legacy by managing burros as protected national symbols while fulfilling their legal mandate to keep herd populations in ecological balance with multiple uses. Discover how we collaborate with the USGS to deliver rigorous scientific research that guides the BLM's management of herds and the landscapes they call home.

Celebrating 50 years of stewardship! 🌟
On October 21, we mark the golden anniversary of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act (FLPMA), the cornerstone of how we care for America’s public lands. Since 1976, FLPMA has shaped our approach to balancing outdoor recreation, energy development, livestock grazing, wildlife habitat, and cultural heritage. Thanks to this landmark law, we continue to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of our landscapes for all.
As we honor FLPMA’s legacy, we’re also looking forward to embracing new opportunities and challenges in the next 50 years of public land management. Together, we can ensure these treasured places remain vibrant and accessible for generations to come.

These prescribed fires are part of ongoing, multi-year efforts to restore landscapes and watersheds by reducing hazardous fuels, improving wildlife habitat, and lowering the risk of catastrophic wildfires. Smoke may be visible during and after operations.

ALT At the top of the Scenic Overlook Trail, you will find an amazing view. The Toiyabe Mountain Range can be seen off in the distance. They are the snowcapped mountains in this photo. When you are there if you look to the left you can see the Toquima Mountain Range. You can also see the beautiful valleys there surrounding the overlook.
