MTP makes autoregressive LLMs fast. Can the same trick work for diffusion LMs? Had a fun collaboration with @modal exploring exactly that: Multi-Token Residual Prediction (MRP) 🚀 The key change: instead of training a small head to predict the next denoising step’s full distribution, we predict the residual between adjacent steps. It’s a much easier target, so a tiny 3-layer module learns it accurately and applies it across several steps. We applied MRP in two regimes: • Static regime → (near-)lossless speedup, up to 1.56× in SGLang. • Dynamic regime → recovers up to +16 accuracy points lost to aggressive low-threshold decoding. 💻 Code, SGLang impl & models in the blog 🔗 modal.com/blog/multi-token-r…

We investigated whether it was possible to do symmetric compression of the sequence during LLM pre-training while preserving causality, and it turns out you can! The trick is to sort the gathered hierarchical sequence and to scatter back carefully.
Today we release Lighthouse Attention, a selection-based hierarchical attention for long-context pre-training that delivers a 1.4-1.7× wall-clock speedup at 98K context. It runs the same forward+backward pass ~17× faster than standard attention at 512K context on a single B200, without a custom sparse attention kernel, a straight-through estimator, or an auxiliary loss. During training, queries, keys, and values are pooled symmetrically into a multi-resolution pyramid. We then score every pyramid heads, and a top-k cascade selects a small hierarchical dense sub-sequence, and after a sorting pass that enforces causality, we use standard attention for token mixing. A brief full attention resume at the end converts the checkpoint back into a competent dense-attention model. Validated this using 530M parameter Llama-3 models across 50B tokens, with up to 1M-token benchmarks across 32 B200s under context parallelism. The work on Lighthouse Attention was led by @bloc97_, @SubhoGhosh02, and @theemozilla.

The basic idea is simple: Let the LLM "see" much more tokens during the first third of the pre-training phase, and then train normally for the remainder of the time. It's less data efficient but more compute efficient, you can train a model for longer or a bigger model.
Today we release Token Superposition Training (TST), a modification to the standard LLM pretraining loop that produces a 2-3× wall-clock speedup at matched FLOPs without changing the model architecture, optimizer, tokenizer, or training data. During the first third of training, the model reads and predicts contiguous bags of tokens, averaging their embeddings on the input side and predicting the next bag with a modified cross-entropy on the output side. For the remainder of the run, it trains normally on next-token prediction. The inference-time model is identical to one produced by conventional pretraining. Validated at 270M, 600M, and 3B dense scales, and at 10B-A1B MoE. The work on TST was led by @bloc97_, @gigant_theo, and @theemozilla.

Announcing the launch of Psyche nousresearch.com/nous-psyche… Nous Research is democratizing the development of Artificial Intelligence. Today, we’re embarking on our greatest effort to date to make that mission a reality: The Psyche Network Psyche is a decentralized training network that makes it possible to bring the world’s compute together to train powerful AI, giving individuals and small communities access to the resources required to create new, interesting, and unique large scale models. We are launching our testnet today with the pre-training of a 40B parameter LLM, a model powerful enough to serve as a foundation for future pursuits in open science. This run represents the largest pre-training run conducted over the internet to date, surpassing previous iterations that trained smaller models on much fewer data tokens.

Nous Research announces the pre-training of a 15B parameter language model over the internet, using Nous DisTrO and heterogeneous hardware contributed by our partners at @Oracle, @LambdaAPI, @NorthernDataGrp, @CrusoeCloud, and the Andromeda Cluster. This run presents a loss curve and convergence rate that meets or exceeds centralized training. Our paper and code on DeMo, the foundational research that led to Nous DisTrO, is now available (linked below).

What if you could use all the computing power in the world to train a shared, open source AI model? Preliminary report: github.com/NousResearch/DisT… Nous Research is proud to release a preliminary report on DisTrO (Distributed Training Over-the-Internet) a family of architecture-agnostic and network-agnostic distributed optimizers that reduces the inter-GPU communication requirements by 1000x to 10,000x without relying on amortized analysis, and matches AdamW+All-Reduce in convergence rates. This enables low-latency training of large neural networks on slow internet bandwidths with heterogeneous networking hardware. DisTrO can increase the resilience and robustness of training LLMs by minimizing dependency on a single entity for computation. DisTrO is one step towards a more secure and equitable environment for all participants involved in building LLMs. Without relying on a single company to manage and control the training process, researchers and institutions can have more freedom to collaborate and experiment with new techniques, algorithms, and models. This increased competition fosters innovation, drives progress, and ultimately benefits society as a whole. This research is thanks to the hard work of @bloc97_ @theemozilla @apyh__ @UmerHAdil. We invite researchers interested in exploring this area to join us in our quest.
