I had a dm asking about what VTubers make and the artist thought VTubers would make money off their art, so they charged double for all clients. I was wondering if the automatic x2 VTuber label from artists was because they are uninformed...?
A research article from Ahn, Jenny & Collis (2025) followed 2.4 million streamers over 26 months where the median streamer made $43 TOTAL after the entire period, with $4.10 being the monthly median. Twitch Tracker also tells us that 99% of streamers have under 20 viewers.
Most of us are in it for the love of the game and spend more money than we should on art. Price accordingly for your time and skill, but please be aware that if you think we are profiting off of you for a personal use commission, it's very unlikely that is true !
Personally, I find that I bring a lot of free promotion to the artist and I am happy to do so because I love art, I love artists, and I WANT more business to go to them. I'm happy to see a price increase as well. But many of us are going into a personal use comm, just to be told it will be 2-3x more BECAUSE we are a VTuber - that just sucks.

Not sure why people are getting this mixed up:
Pieces for CONTENT, STREAMS and MERCH
SHOULD contain content use or commercial fees as appropriate!
Personal use pieces should be for PERSONAL use. It’s a PSA for that person who asked and anyone else who thought VTubers gained profit from personal use pieces, so they charged more.
Artists that add a 2-3x multiplayer for pieces with NO FINANCIAL GAIN (e.g. personal use phone wallpaper) are going to lose customers before they get them. If you’re fine with that, that’s fine too. Always price for your time and effort. It’s just a PSA if you want to attract more VTuber clients.
I also saw someone say what if they post a personal use piece and it gains lots of traction? Well, what if the piece comm’d is Piakchu from Pokemon and that blows up? What a strange argument. Personal use is personal use.
To those who only took my last point and said not to skimp on fees and pay the artist in exposure - you missed the entire post lol if that is your takeaway. Artists deserve to be paid fairly, but they should know their audience and the meaning of personal use if they want to bring in clients.

the name of the commission was something like “full art” with the base price was actually $90 but advertised as $60! there was no option for $60 as the minimum cost at all.
the detail fee went to $150+, which means there is no limit for having a complex chatacter design: the artist could charge whatever they feel like.
there is no problem for pricing higher, the false advertisement is the problem.
for your suggestion: the minimum price for full body with minimum background - if the listing title says that (e.g, Full body illustration), it would be fine to keep the minimum price.
this artist should have put the base price as $90, and either put a picture of the icon as the thumbnail or something similar
let me know if it doesn’t make sense !
I know you said you don’t do this, but just explaining one more gripe:
VTubers are a HUGE population of the VGEN clientele, so a 2x charge because they are a vtuber, not based on the use, comes across very upsetting to us. some people just want a background for their phone or wallpaper, or art as a gift for friend, but gets his with a double charge. of course it’s up to the artist, but when you automatically charge you will lose clients.
when I was new one of my reference sheets got charged double just because I wanted to become a VTuber, even though I already had the design made by another artist, and I’ve never done anything with it besides provide it as a reference :/ I don’t even have the opportunity for it to be made into merch or monetised because it’s a reference sheet lol.
