Imo the discussion on sharing fics comes down to: we consent to people downloading them because we are aware AO3 has that feature, but not random people putting them in mass public folders for download without our knowledge of who and where and what is being done with them

fanartists can do commissions, set up shops selling products with other people's characters, put "don't repost" on every piece of fanart they put out, but if a fic writer asks to not be reposted or (god forbid) asks for kudos/comments yall will take them out back and shoot them

like. if you think you're that entitled to other people's fics because you have no respect for writing as a craft on the same level as fanart or any handmade work then surely you can just AI-generate your own slop instead of taking others' work. it won't make a difference to you.
