I've done a bit of personal writing over the years. Today I published by far the most difficult essay I've written. On @STATNews, I share the story of my mother, Regina Bosch. She was brilliant--three Ivy degrees--and funny and charismatic. She was also seriously mentally ill.

I dug into the finances of the three nonprofit arbitrators resolving No Surprises Act disputes. For every dollar they made in '25, ~half was pure profit. Read more about these 'mini-gods' and how they're getting rich off their new jobs. tinyurl.com/5ye2csun via @statnews

“The only thing that brought me back was that my wife got pregnant, and I was like, 'Well, we need health insurance.’” From almost being out of baseball to performing in the NLCS. What a journey for Jake Bauers. @MLBONFOX | @KevinBurkhardt | @AROD | @DavidOrtiz | @DerekJeter

I truly can’t comprehend STAT without Helen. She was fierce, kind, smart, and so generous with her time and knowledge. This is a devastating loss for STAT, for her family, for science journalism, the public statnews.com/2026/10/13/hele…

Health insurance premiums are hammering workers and their employers. It all comes back to the high, inscrutable prices that hospitals, pharma companies, and other entities charge — and that health insurers willingly pay. statnews.com/2026/10/05/hosp…

CMS Administrator Dr. Oz is in Texas talking about small employer health coverage. He mentions how "most-favored nation" deals (which are secret) pushed down drug prices "more than they have been reduced in 60 years." That is, in a word, baloney. statnews.com/2026/08/18/whit…

Health insurers and employers are dialing back coverage of GLP-1s for weight loss due to the drugs' high prices and usage. Now, Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk are marketing the drugs more to "customers" than to payers. Great read from @elaineywchen: statnews.com/2026/09/28/glp1…

A private equity owned hospital chain is converting to a nonprofit. On its face, it sounds like a good deal. But who actually benefits? Quorum's hospitals will get loaded with 30% more debt while Quorum's lenders are almost made whole. tinyurl.com/msa85h9b via @statnews

woah. Court just unsealed Summary Judgment motions in New York Times v OpenAI / Microsoft. Easy to see why the AI companies had so many redactions (pink). Their own people wrote the lede for NYT, the "largest theft of labor in human history"... "more and more substitutive..." /1

MedPAC has consistently reported overpayments in Medicare Advantage. Health insurance companies want to kneecap how MedPAC reports these overpayments. Now, insurers have allies in Congress: Republicans, @john_wilkerson reports. statnews.com/2026/09/16/medi…

Paul Ginsburg, a health economist at USC and a former MedPAC commissioner, said the bill “is the most extreme example that I am aware of in which a stakeholder has worked to undermine MedPAC’s independence.”

This is very wonky and technical, but the end result is important. If this became law, it would force MedPAC to produce a report that makes Medicare Advantage look *way* better. It would nuke independent research and make it more likely for insurers to keep their MA gravy train.
