70th anniversary of the uprising against the Soviets
Never heard this audio before or knew much about it:
~ On October 23, 1956, Hungarians rose up against Soviet-backed communist rule, demanding freedom, democracy, and independence from Moscow.
After initial victories, the revolution appeared to succeed, but on November 4, the Soviet Union launched a massive military invasion to crush it.
As Soviet tanks rolled into Budapest, desperate Hungarian radio operators broadcast appeals to the United Nations and the Western world, crying, “This is Hungary calling! For the sake of God and freedom, help Hungary!”
No Western military intervention came. Approximately 2,500 Hungarians were killed, thousands were imprisoned, and around 200,000 fled the country. Prime Minister Imre Nagy was later executed, and Hungary remained under communist rule until 1989. ~
