A friend of mine who lives in the US called me on WhatsApp. We've kept in touch since he relocated there. He got married last month, and during our conversation, he asked for my account number so his university classmates could send their wedding contributions to him through my account. I asked him if he was active in their class WhatsApp group. He said no, but he reads their messages most of the time. He told me that when someone suggested contributing money for him, some people objected, saying he doesn't contribute when others ask for donations. But some of his classmates defended him. They explained that he helps people but prefers to contribute privately through DMs rather than have his name appear on the group's list of contributors. He said there are about 80 people in the group, and 32 contributed. Of those 32, about 17 were people he had helped financially while they were in university and even after graduation, before he travelled to the US. He paid school fees for some, gave others money for food and transport, and even helped some start small businesses. He wasn't expecting anything from them, but he was surprised that some of his classmates stood up for him when others questioned his participation.
