In Spain, a drought turns the world’s largest olive oil producing region brown.
NASA’s Terra satellite shows where green vegetation in May 2022 (left) turned brown by May 2023 (right). The drought dried up reservoirs, parched olive groves, and led to water restrictions.
ALT Satellite image of Spain from May 2022. The landscape has many patches of dark and light green vegetation on top of a sandy brown base. The ocean to the left and bottom of the region is dark blue.
ALT Satellite image of Spain from May 2023, during a drought. The area is now mostly brown with patches of dark brown and grey where there was green vegetation a year ago. The ocean to the left and bottom of the region is dark blue, with some cloud coverage in the bottom right.

In 1959, 9yo Ronald McNair was told he couldn't check out his books from Lake City's segregated library. He went on to become Karate champion, earned an MIT PhD in physics, and became a NASA astronaut.
Today that library is named after him.

My power’s really low, so this may be the last image I can send. Don’t worry about me though: my time here has been both productive and serene. If I can keep talking to my mission team, I will – but I’ll be signing off here soon. Thanks for staying with me.
ALT Wide-angle photo from NASA’s InSight lander on Mars shows the area in front of the lander in the late afternoon sun. Two science instruments tethered to the lander rest on the sandy surface nearby. Part of the lander’s robotic arm is visible extending down from the top left. Distortion from the wide-angle lens bends the distant horizon into a curved shape, while low-angle sunlight causes a small bluish lens flare on the right side.

(Thread) In the first What If? book, I answered a question about cooking a steak by dropping it from space. At one point, I commented—jokingly!—that if anyone put a steak in a hypersonic wind tunnel to gather better data, I’d love to see the video.
Well, I have good news.
