There's a growing understanding of the importance of empathy (the ability to understand, share & respond to emotions/perspectives of others) for leaders. For every competency that helps a leader become more empathetic you can draw a line that connects it with a better way of delivering results. @hacking_hr has produced a leader's "playbook" for empathy. It sets out: - 9 strategies to build trust and a people-centric culture through empathy - 7 ways to improve the experience of people at work through empathy - 10 key actions for empathy-driven success in leadership - 8 competencies of the empathetic leader - key insights on the power of cultivating empathetic leadership at work linkedin.com/pulse/leaders-p…. There are some really great practical things that teams can do to build #psychologicalsafety in this article @GatesheadOD
I really like this new article on psychological safety (a belief that we can speak up, take risks & make mistakes without fear of being judged, humiliated or punished) at work. It sets out a series of activities/approaches that all of us can use to build psychological safety in our teams. These include: - Manual of Me - Team Charter - Lifelife - Activity from Google that ranks sources of anxiety - 5-word Fridays - Team temperature check uxdesign.cc/creating-psychol…. Love this 👏
New research examined 41 empirical studies published between 2002 and 2021 buff.ly/3xrWlVm From these studies, the researchers identified six dimensions which appear to consistently be the mark of a compassionate leader #leadership #compassion #sketchnote

Psychological safety: how to get members of our teams to actually speak up. It's a common leadership misconception that just by encouraging team members to voice opinions we create a culture of openness. We need to address the issues (individual & systemic) that prevent people from speaking up. Five actions: 1) Express intent (but only ask for the level of candour you’re ready & able to receive) 2) Use standard questions like "what are the pros & cons of this idea?" ("What do you think?” can feel like a trap) 3) Discuss communication preferences & use the mediums that play to their preferences rather than yours 4) Lend social capital to people who are in the minority in your organisation (& less likely to speak up) - disrupt biases by giving them the floor 5) Attribute credit fairly to the people who did the work hbr.org/2024/06/how-to-get-y…. Earlier this week, I posted about the critical leadership role of building belonging at work. Several people asked me about how we measure belonging. So I wanted to highlight this study from @Coqual_ , USA. Using a ten point scale, based on four elements, they showed: 1) people who feel a strong sense of belonging are less likely to leave 2) race and gender make a significant difference to how much people feel a sense of belonging 3) people born in another country have some of the lowest belonging scores at work 4) extroverts have higher belonging scores than introverts 5) senior leaders have the highest belonging scores talentinnovation.org/_privat…

This is a brilliant piece looking at the true concept of #PsychologicalSafety which isn’t about being nice to everyone all of the time, but being comfortable with the uncomfortable stuff; feeling able to speak out without fear of reprisal (5 min read) @GatesheadOD

Research by @CCLdotORG found teams with high degrees of psychological safety reported higher levels of performance & lower levels of interpersonal conflict. They also found that senior leadership teams reported the greatest differences in their perceived levels of psychological safety: it means that senior teams are the place where creative problem solving is most likely to be squashed & teams fail to collaborate & innovate together to their full potential. They suggest 8 steps for leaders to help create a more psychologically safe workplace: 1. Make psychological safety an explicit priority 2. Facilitate everyone speaking up 3. Establish norms for how failure is handled 4. Create space for new ideas (even wild ones) 5. Embrace productive conflict 6. Pay close attention and look for patterns 7. Make an intentional effort to promote dialogue 8. Celebrate wins ccl.org/articles/leading-eff…
