We're proud to announce the establishment of the Generative Art Foundation Creative Coding Award, made possible by a generous grant from the Generative Art Foundation (@genartfound). Over the next two years, their gift will fund scholarships to Artist Commons for artists working with technology so they can get the resources, mentorship, and community they need to develop their work further.
We're deeply grateful to @jeffgdavis, @ArtOnBlockchain, and the entire team at the Generative Art Foundation for investing in this community of artists and the future of this evolving field.
We're excited to, in a couple weeks, introduce the recipients of the 2026 awards 🎉

1974 → 1985 → 2025.
I have Peter Beyls work in my collection spanning more than 50 years, and one of the things I love about putting these pieces next to each other is realizing that Peter isn't a historical computer artist. He's a computer artist who has a history.
He has a show of new work coming October 2 to the Bantam Tools Machine Arts Gallery.

When Mark Wilson moved from painting to programming his first microcomputers in the early 1980s, he named the resulting series Douat Dump — a title that looks like a typo for "donut" and is anything but. This sheet, Douat Dump A20 (1982), is the program dumping its permutations of tilted squares in plotted ink: bre.art/collection/pion-2016…
The name honors Père Dominique Douat, a Carmelite friar who in 1722 published a book that enumerated every arrangement of Truchet's diagonally-halved two-color tile — four orientations named A, B, C, D, whole designs printed as letter grids you could "execute" without ever seeing a picture. Source code and sample output, 260 years before Wilson's plotter. The full 1722 facsimile is readable in our library, right next to the drawing named after it: bre.art/research/library/dou…
PS. Mark Wilson's show at @bantamtools @machinegallery opens tomorrow, Friday at 6PM in Peekskill NY.
Vera Molnar’s Transformations, étanche (2010) revisits the catalogue from her first solo exhibition in 1976, an early computer-art sequence moving from geometric order toward disorder. A beautiful artifact of plotter art, publishing, and algorithmic thinking. bre.art/research/library/mol…

In collecting, I went down a rabbit hole of early computer poetry. I bought this 3.5" disk by bpnichols who was a Canadian poet who published lots of poetry books, then a 5 1/4" floppy, a 3.5" disk with computer enabled poetry, and then a bunch more poetry books before dieing way to young. In the source file, there is an easter egg that let's you find a computer love poem too his wife. Go check out the book and then click the link to run it in the browser. It took me a while to get it running original apple IIe code in the browser at the right clock speed. Enjoy the poetry, it doesn't take long. Then click the link to run the secret love letter program. bre.art/research/library/bpn…
I dug into Vera Molnar's Tango 74 book today. Check out my note about it! bre.art/notes/a-tango-of-two…
