My priorities with music shift all the time. Sometimes to the point where music isn’t really a priority at all. But lately, I’ve slowly been finding my way back into it. 🎸 It started with wanting to learn a guitar solo. Then another solo caught my attention. Then another. Before I knew it, I was thinking about how I should be practicing more theory, working on technique, and improving my overall musicianship. And don’t get me wrong, all of that has its place in my continued musical journey. But something has been nagging at me. I’ve got so many songs I’ve started writing over the years that I’ve never finished. Classic me. 😅 And I’ve come to a realization. I don’t need another solo to learn right now. I need to finish one of my own songs. Not because learning and practicing aren’t important, but because I want to take something I’ve created all the way to completion. And I think I know where to start. About two years ago, I wrote the lyrics to a song about my grandpa just after her passed away🙏 The lyrics just came at me so quick…almost like they came from him as a way to help me cope with the loss💜 I’ve got a rough scratch recording of myself playing guitar and singing at the same time last fall. Plenty of mistakes, of course, but it’s there. Post in comments… And last Christmas, I actually performed the song for my grandma for the first time…later than I wanted…promise kept💜 I also made her another promise that I’d share a proper recording of it with her once it was finished. And that’s something I’ve been thinking about. Time doesn’t wait for anybody. I’m optimistic that I’ll have many more years with my grandma. I certainly hope so. But the reality is, none of us knows what tomorrow brings. And I don’t want to keep putting off something that means this much to me, especially when it means something to someone I love. So I think it’s time to stop bouncing between all the things I could be practicing and start making progress on something I really want to finish. It’s time to lay down some tracks, finish this song, and keep that promise to my grandma.🎙️ One song at a time. One promise worth keeping. Let’s get after it. 🎸💜
