Tonight I learnt an Alan Paton prayer.
I hope โThe Courage To Do Justiceโ & these particular words guide GOOD & our supporters:
โLet me not be afraid to defend the weak because of the anger of the strong,
Nor afraid to defend the poor because of the anger of the rich.โ โ at Cape Town, South Africa

Brett Herron highlights concerns about Cape Townโs electricity costs and the Cityโs practice of deducting prepaid electricity units to recover outstanding debt, including debt owed by landlords or property owners rather than residents.
An Affordable City means ensuring residents are not unfairly burdened by debts they do not owe. GOOD proposes reviewing the Cityโs credit control policy so residents can access the electricity they pay for, with fair procedures, accountability and protection against deductions made without an opportunity to dispute the debt.

If should be a much bigger story that @geordinhl thinks Navi Pillay's work doing *literally her job* is divisive. She's just been named a Nobel Peace Prize winner, and the 2nd biggest party is unable to congratulate her cause she made a finding based on evidence?
Electricity Tariffs: the DAโs in court, AGAIN, to charge us more. They tried to keep it hush-hush but we found it in the NERSA record of decision documents that I got through PAIA.

Brett Herron urged voters to assess the Cityโs track record, question whether past promises have been delivered and examine what different parties have done in council.
A City With A Say means ensuring residents have a meaningful voice in decisions affecting their communities. GOOD calls for stronger public participation and greater accountability, arguing that residents should be able to scrutinise government decisions, protect community assets and assess political parties on both their plans and their record in public service.

Brett Herron, GOODโs Cape Town mayoral candidate, is calling for greater decision-making power for sub-councils, including control over community budget allocations in consultation with residents, so local needs can be addressed closer to where people live.
A City With A Say means giving communities a meaningful role in local government. GOOD proposes piloting devolved powers in selected sub-councils during the first year, followed by an independent review before expanding the model across Cape Town.

An Equitable City means ensuring that both formal and informal settlements receive fair access to municipal services, safer streets and employment opportunities. Residents also need responsive local government that works with community organisations and addresses long-standing service delivery concerns.

Brett Herron highlights the importance of open and transparent communication in government, arguing that meaningful public consultation can help prevent unnecessary frustration when decisions affect peopleโs lives.
From the sale of public assets to proposed data centres, residents need timely access to information and opportunities to engage before decisions are made. A City With A Say means moving beyond outdated communication methods and ensuring that people can understand the potential benefits, costs and consequences of government decisions before they are implemented.

A resident from Covid informal settlements described the lack of water, toilets and electricity at a community meeting in Green Park. After a fire destroyed their electricity supply, residents are left using candles, while years of broken promises have eroded their faith in voting.
A Housed City must mean more than putting a roof over peopleโs heads. It must include access to basic services, dignified living conditions and infrastructure that communities can rely on. Residents deserve accountability from their elected representatives and meaningful action to address the conditions they continue to live in.

Cape Town cannot remain a tale of two cities one filled with opportunity and the other left struggling to survive.
GOODโs six pledges set out a vision for a city that works for every resident, regardless of their income, background or where they live.
๐ A Housed City โ decent, affordable housing closer to opportunities.
๐ฐ An Affordable Cityโ easing the cost-of-living pressure on households.
โ๏ธ An Equitable Cityโ confronting spatial apartheid and addressing inequality.
๐ก๏ธ A Safer City โ creating safer communities for all.
๐ค A Trusted City โ building a government that listens, acts transparently and is accountable to residents.
๐ผ A Working Cityโ creating sustainable jobs and expanding economic opportunities.
These pledges are about building a Cape Town where public resources serve the people, communities are not left behind, and every resident has a fair chance to thrive.
One city. One standard. Equal opportunities for all.

Cape Town cannot move forward while the legacy of spatial apartheid continues to keep people far from opportunities. Families are pushed to the outskirts of the city, spending hours commuting and more money on transport just to access jobs, schools and essential services.
Affordable housing must bring people closer to where life happens. By making better use of well-located land in and around the inner city, we can create communities where residents have easier access to employment, public transport and essential services.
GOODโs Housed City pledge focuses on addressing spatial injustice and making affordable housing part of building a more equal Cape Town.
A city for everyone, not just those who can afford to live close to opportunity. One standard for every street, suburb and community.

As part of GOOD's Housed City manifesto pledge, we are committed to building a city where well-located, affordable housing is a priority, and where families no longer languish on endless, broken housing waiting lists. Grounded in our A Trusted City pledge, residents must have a real say over their communities through open and transparent decision-making. ๐งก๐ก
