In 2000 Desmond appointed Martin O’Neill rather than Gus Hiddink. Hiddink insisted on having complete control. Also, he wasn’t Irish. Desmond essentially still applies the same selection criteria a quarter of a century later. I don’t see much changing whenever Martin goes
