The @urbandictionary says "Lilac sky" = "A moment of pure completion. A moment of complete satisfaction... when you feel as though the world is at rest." May your Christmas be a "lilac sky" day, despite the worries + fears of today's world. May the Christ child bring you peace.

Carrie Fisher was paid $850 a week to play Princess Leia. George Lucas owned her face. She was 19. She signed the contract, and with it the rights to her likeness. Then came the dolls. The action figures. The shampoo bottles. The Pez dispensers. Star Wars merchandise went on to make billions, and none of it was hers. Lucas later gave her a quarter of a percent of his own profits. By 1980, it was worth about $320,000. Alec Guinness got 2.25% of the profits on the same film. 28 years later, at Lucas’s lifetime achievement tribute, she stood at the podium and settled the score in front of all of Hollywood. She put it on the record: “You have owned my likeness all these years, so that every time I look in the mirror, I have to send you a check for a couple of bucks.” The room laughed. Lucas laughed. The case for Lucas: he took the risk, Fox laughed at him, and nobody knew it would be Star Wars. The case for Fisher: she was the face on the box, and the box made billions. Here’s the lesson: if you don’t own your name, someone else will sell it. In the video, she roasts him for four minutes. Watch her, then decide. Was she joking, or finally saying it out loud?

A wonderfully measured, thoughtful response to recent events in France from the Episcopalian Bishop of Europe (American branch of the Anglican Communion), Rt. Rev. Mark Eddington (see link in first comment).

Dear friends, during some recent medical examinations, the doctors found a small, localized nodule in my lung. It was detected at a very early stage and is well-localized. The doctors believe that it is best to intervene, so, following their advice, I have decided to undergo surgery to remove it. The operation is already scheduled to take place in the coming days. I thank you for your spiritual closeness and entrust myself to your prayers.

NEW: Pope Leo XIV said on Sunday that doctors had found a nodule on his lung and that he would have surgery to remove it at Rome’s Gemelli hospital early this week. He told pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square that it was “detected at a very early stage” and asked them to pray for him. The announcement, made in his own voice before the operation, extends a decades-long shift toward openness about papal health that began in earnest under Francis. thelettersfromleo.com/p/pope…

In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.

St Francis reads a sermon to birds who flock to a tree to listen. A wallpainting at Wissington, Suffolk. Today's the 800th anniversary of the death of St Francis in 1226. The Wissington paintings are dated c1280, so it's just possible the artist was alive in the saint's lifetime.

Great to see Japan’s brilliant Ambassador @AmbJapanUK enjoying Ma Boyle’s Scouse during his visit to Liverpool. A few more diplomats like Ambassador Suzuki and the world would be a better place. Ma Boyle’s: share.google/wZ9K68zME6DYHuQ…

Just seen a post from Tynemouth RNLI on FB .. one of their team is doing the Great North Run (half marathon) in full inshore kit. He had set a target of £1,000, and the current total is £14,984, plus Gift Aid. Good British people are NOT represented by masked guys in balaclavas.

An unforgettable experience being part of the choir for the Papal Mass today. But as its often the case for me at such events it was as much about the encounters, conversations + sharing with those around me, in today's case my fellow singers. The Pope was the catalyst...

NEW: Pope Leo XIV celebrated Mass with an estimated 800,000 people in Paris on Saturday, after spending the morning with migrants, the poor, and adults newly entering the Catholic Church. At a migrant house, he said the history of the Church and of humanity “is not written by those who give the impression of winning by imposing themselves and ‘dominating the room,’ but by those who ‘make room.’” “For Christians,” he added, “the poor are not a sociological category, but the very flesh of Christ.” thelettersfromleo.com/p/draw…

It is almost impossible to put into words what we are witnessing today in Paris. A million people gathered for the Mass of Pope Leo XIV, stretching along the Champs-Élysées all the way to the Arc de Triomphe. They are not simply watching—they are participating, praying, singing, and calling out the name of the Successor of Peter. For a moment, the streets of Paris have become a vast place of pilgrimage. Whatever one may say about the state of faith in France, today offers a striking reminder: the Catholic faith is still deeply woven into the soul of this country like so many other nations in Europe.
