“Without sacrifice, there is no freedom. Without freedom, there is no life. God bless them who give their all for us.” — Greig Beck This is not just work. It is rent we commit to pay every day. In time, in focus, in sacrifice. Because what we are building demands it. And because freedom is not owed. It is earned daily. #KnowTheCost #BuiltWithPurpose #EverydayRent

Every Friday, we put one business from our community in front of the room. Real owner, real offer, real contact details. One feature is a gesture. A feature every Friday without fail is a system. The consistency is what turns attention into trust. Your Friday is coming.

Your payment terms are a supplier filter. A sixty-day term asks the supplier to fund your order for two months. Big suppliers can carry it. Small ones cannot, so they never quote. You never see them. The terms are screening on balance sheet, not on the quality of the work.

Some businesses start with a gap in the market. Kasi Love started with a love story. Jambase brought his wife flowers for no reason, and wondered how many others were waiting to feel that seen. In 2019 he and Portia built it into a business. Flowers, gifts and plants across Gauteng. 084 506 7582

Procurement cannot approve what it cannot compare. A buyer with three quotes is not grading effort. They are looking for the one they can line up against the others and defend. Clear scope, matching line items, terms stated plainly. You cannot always be the cheapest. You can always be the clearest.

Member spotlight: Luc Muitabayi, founder of Muitapole Security Services, Johannesburg. Close protection, armed response, event security, and guarding contracts for residential, commercial, industrial and mining sites. If you run premises that need a guarding roster that holds, this is the introduction to make. [email protected]

The lowest quote is a price, not a cost. The cost arrives later: the late delivery, the work done twice, the supplier who goes quiet mid-order. None of it is on the quote. All of it lands on the buyer. What lowers the risk is knowing the business before you award. That is the cost we remove.

Most business owners know the feeling: the books are behind, the tax is a worry at the back of the mind, and it gets put off another month. It is the quiet thing that holds a good business back. Dikeledi Seoloane built a firm to fix exactly that. She started Matsobanemetja in 2013, getting small businesses' bookkeeping, accounting and tax in order, and has grown it to serve large companies too. Our Friday Member Spotlight. Clean books are how a business becomes fundable, tender-ready and trusted. If you have been putting that off, she is worth knowing. 060 705 2488 | [email protected] | matsobanemetja.co.za

Fronting survives in the gap between a certificate and a relationship. You cannot audit your way out of it, more paperwork produces better paperwork, not better suppliers. What starves fronting is knowing the business: its people, its premises, its track record. A list can be gamed. A known quantity cannot.

Once a week we stop and point at one business. BrownSense runs a Friday Member Spotlight: one Black-owned business, put in front of the whole community. Not chosen for size or polish, but for real work, real customers, and the quiet consistency of someone building something that lasts. We do it because visibility is unevenly distributed. Plenty of capable businesses never get seen, not because the work is weak, but because no one with a platform turned and looked. A spotlight is a small correction to that.

Helping a supplier grow is not the same as giving them a bigger order. Sometimes a bigger order is what breaks them. Scale needs working capital timed to the order, systems that hold quality, capacity built ahead of demand. That is the part between the first order and the tenth.

Some businesses start by falling in love with something beautiful. Comfort Ndlondlo was already in construction when natural stone finishes caught him, so he travelled to Joburg just to see and feel them, then decided to bring them home to Eswatini. That is how Ingwe Designs began. Premium natural stone cladding, rivens cut from slate, sandstone, his signature autumn stones, all natural, from Nhlambeni in Manzini across the whole kingdom, and increasingly into nearby South African towns like Nelspruit and Piet Retief. Our Friday Member Spotlight. If you build, renovate, or specify finishes, he is worth knowing.

A look at the work. These are Rivens cut from slate for a smoother finish than the strip, alongside the rich autumn stones that are Comfort's signature, and a range of natural sandstone. To enquire: +268 76439235.

Heritage Day, 24 September. Most of today's content will be about dress. Trade is the part of the inheritance that was actually taken. A trading position that was broken for most of a century does not resume because a day exists on the calendar. Somebody has to rebuild the route between the buyer and the supplier. That is the work.

A certificate says a supplier met a requirement once. A reference says what happened when the pressure was on. Compliance folders cannot tell you who delivered when the order was late. The people who worked with them can. A community produces references a database never will.

Selling through a marketplace means accepting terms you did not draft. Our founder speaks on The Legal Non-Negotiables at the OS Lab Regulatory Horizon and Marketplace Risk Summit, 23 and 24 November 2026, Sandton. oslabevents.co.za/

No spotlight this week. Instead, let me tell you something from the heart about why this place exists. BrownSense was not started to be another noticeboard. It was born out of something harder: the need for us to stop waiting to be let in, and to build a room where we could rely on one another. Where a Black-owned business did not have to stand alone, hoping to be chosen, but could turn to the person beside it and say, I have got you, and mean it. That is the whole reason. Self-reliance, but as a collective. And being a collective means we push each other too. It means when I win, I reach back and pull you forward, because a win is not a real, lasting one if I am the only one who eats. Not each of us surviving in isolation, but all of us holding a little of each other's weight, and refusing to leave anyone behind. And this week, quietly, that is exactly what I watched happen. People showing up, naming what they are building, and reaching back to help the person above them. No fanfare. Just us, being what we were always meant to be for one another. So if you have been reading all this time and never posted, hear me. This room is yours too. Tell us what you make and who you are trying to reach. Someone here is looking for exactly what you do. And when you see them, open the door. That is how we win. Together, or not at all.

The cheapest supplier on paper is often the most expensive in practice. Distance has a cost: lead times, time zones, and the inability to walk in and fix it. A developed local supplier offers what a spreadsheet misses. Proximity is speed.
76
Most orders do not fail loudly. They stall. Someone asks for a quote. They come back with questions, which is usually a good sign. You send the documents. They tell you it is going to their manager, or to procurement, or to the end of the month. Then nothing. The hard part is not the no. The hard part is that you never get one. So you hold the stock. You keep the date open. You follow up once, then twice, and by the third time you are reading your own message back wondering whether you sounded desperate. You go over the meeting again looking for the moment it turned, and you cannot find it, because there probably was not one. We want to hear about a door that did not open for you. One that looked like it might. What was the last thing that happened before it went quiet?

Every procurement team has a few large suppliers it trusts and keeps returning to. That concentration feels safe. It is not: no price tension, no cover when one fails, no succession when one exits. A wider, tested supplier base is not charity. It is resilience.

Tomorrow, 15:10, Sandton Convention Centre. Day 2 of Seamless Africa. Our founder, @MzuzukileSoni, is in conversation with Shamiela Letsoalo, Chairperson of the Ecommerce Forum South Africa, on "Localise to globalise: scaling African marketplaces with smart cross-border tech". Two vantage points on the same market. Hers from the platform and policy side. Ours from the side of the supplier trying to get a single order across a border. What we are taking in: what it actually costs a small business to sell into a second African market, which of those costs large platforms can absorb using infrastructure they have already built, and what is left standing after that. Our starting position is that the part nobody has managed to standardise is who will vouch for you in a market where your name means nothing. If you are there on Day 2, come and disagree with us in the room. Registration: secure.terrapinn.com/V5/gues…
