Bitcoin Exchange Balance

This is what keeping Bitcoin on exchanges does. Just like banks can lend more than they hold, exchanges could sell more paper Bitcoin than they actually have and still keep the balance sheet in check. I'd be curious to see what happens when people start withdrawing.
