Big news 🌎🌍🌏: Earthling Maps v1 has launched! Read about it, give it a try, and reach out with any feedback. They're maps that aim to work well even when really small, with defaults to set the stage for great cartography regardless of map-making experience.
Earthling Maps is here! It's all about creating focused maps for articles, newsletters, social media, and presentations, to orient your audience. Learn more in the launch post:

For my more technical friends: in future posts I'll go deeper into its automatic projection system, meaning that even if users have never heard of projections they'll result in maps with less distortion. See you later Web Mercator!

This is made possible by a home-grown map renderer to pull off what MapLibre and OpenLayers haven't quite prioritized, combining vector tiles with arbitrary projections. It's @d3js_org palette of projections combined with protomaps vector tiles/styles, rendered to Canvas and SVG.
I'm long overdue for a social media update, so here it goes. I moved out of DC to the Hudson Valley and I've been freelancing, continuing to enjoy making graphics and tools, designing, coding, and a lot of mapping. I'm about 2 hours north of New York City
Behind the scenes, Earthling uses global vector tilesets (via @protomaps) combined with @d3js_org.'s vast palette of projections, with all the automatic labeling expected from basemaps. This is the starting point to add labels and markers specific to your story.
This is just the beginning, and you can sign up to find out when @earthlingmaps launches its public preview, coming soon. Learn more in the FAQ earthlingmaps.com/learn/faq

Another invaluable article from @rsimmon
There’s a wealth of scientific data trapped in data formats that can be tricky to read. The latest entry in my Gentle Introduction to GDAL series explains how to access data in NetCDF, HDF, & GRIB.

ALT Two orthographic maps of sea ice thickness centered on 75˚N and the Prime Merdian for the week of March 12–18, 2011 and March 9–15, 2024. Thees weeks represent sea ice maximum for the first and most recent years of the Cryosat-2 mission. The thickest ice, colored in light green, is concentrated along the north coast of Greenland and Arctic Canada. Thinner ice, colored dark blue, fills the rest of the Arctic Ocean, but does not extend outside it.

Felt the #earthquake?
Earthquakes in the eastern U.S. are felt over a MUCH bigger area than the West Coast.
Why?
Eastern U.S. has older rocks. They were subject to extreme pressures and temperatures. They’re denser and so shaking travels much farther.
Example: – at Sagamore, MA
