Deregulate quantity, not quality.

The way NIMBYs throw the word "deregulation" around you'd think the main fight in housing was over bringing back asbestos insulation instead of whether a single-family homeowner should be able to build an apartment building under a basically otherwise unchanged regulatory regime

Greens policy position is literally the same as One Nation except on a localised level. Keep migrants OUT of OUR Balmain

Sydney & Melbourne are at exactly the size where adding more cars doesn’t work
Car-first metro growth scales unbelievably smoothly up to ~5M people, but as the 60-90min commute zone bogs down, you end up wishing you'd chosen more balanced growth + road pricing Most US cities aren't on track to grow that big, but the ~dozen that do are super important

every new luxury building is somebody’s affordable apartment in 20 years. that’s how literally every older apartment you can afford right now came to exist. someone built it new and someone complained it was too fancy

Every driver privatises public space. Creating a loading zone distributes that public space more widely than if it's privatised by a single driver.

if only the Australian Greens would realise this in their overzealous attempts to become beige copycats of Mamdani
The New York TImes: What’s one issue in politics that you’ve changed your mind about? Zohran Mamdani: The role of the private market in housing construction.

The QVB would never have been built under today’s heritage regime. The city had to demolish the old central markets on the site to build it. This is what used to be there. dictionaryofsydney.org/index…
if we allowed more homes yimbys will knock down qvb! we must abolish all homebuilding 😤

A parking lot turns into an apartment building with 120 units That’s 200+ vehicles displaced and turned into parking refugees All so a few selfish people can “live” close to some dirty area called downtown But they never stopped to think about the poor cars

However frustrated you may be by the dominance of cars, it's important not to talk about motorists this way. Cars are a problem in cities, for purely geometric reasons, but the people in the cars are not enemies. We just want them to have more and better options.
Motorists are an invasive species in cities and should be controlled with every tool in the urban toolbox.

"heritage" is a smokescreen for NIMBYism and status quo bias.
Heritage policy is a fraud. We forgo billions preserving ordinary suburban houses. Exacerbating the housing affordability crisis. But neglect items of genuine value, like 18th century graves. "heritage" is a smokescreen for NIMBYism and status quo bias. youtube.com/watch?v=YaJg0Dtl…

a 5,000 pound suv kills a pedestrian and it is a tragic accident. a bike lane proposal kills a parking space and it is a war on cars.

One weird thing about traffic jams: I've noticed motorcyclists go between the other vehicles to get around traffic But cars can't fit What if we made the spaces between each lane larger so that additional cars could fit through during traffic jams?

People who sometimes use a bicycle for transportation are much better drivers because they have more than just a windshield perspective of the world around them. You don't need to ride a bike long distances or every day. Periodic bike rides will improve your driving.

I did this once and the guy in the car jumped out and came after me. I ducked onto a store and hid behind a rack of clothes. Car-brained people are insane.
Don't block the crosswalk.

Great campaign by the RACQ on road deaths in Queensland. Meanwhile the government is addressing the issue by **checks notes** raising bicycle helmet fines to the highest in the world.
