Thank you to friend and epic tech journalist @DavidNeedle for sharing this recap of @THErealDVORAK John C Dvorak’s memorial service last Saturday. He captured the day perfectly—from the gathering of their original 1982 InfoWorld colleagues to the unfiltered, deeply human stories that truly defined John’s legacy. If you knew and loved John, or simply appreciate the rich history of tech journalism, David’s tribute is a must-read and a wonderful watch: Recapping the John C. Dvorak Memorial I attended last Saturday. The pic shows my Infoworld pals (and Lee Felsentein) gathered at the Kona Club in Oakland Saturday night right after the Memorial. I used a special filter to make us look old – fun! (Go with me on that)! John was my boss when I started at Infoworld in 1982. He was the Editor (under Editor-in-Chief Maggie Canon). Eight of us on that staff from over 40 years ago were in attendance. Incredible. Photo: (far left) Lee Felsenstein (designer of the Osborne Computer, among other things!). The Dvorak family told wonderful, amusing stories about what a cranky jerk JCD could be (as did I!) and yet also proved to be so many times a loving father and friend. His No Agenda partner Adam Curry told great stories about their twenty-year collaboration starting with their first meeting (Adam had been a famous MTV VJ / personality). Dvorak says to Adam: “So what’s your deal – you rich or something?” Adam also had to figure out how to make their audio decent quality since Dvorak refused to wear a headset and there was a a feedback issue. The service went about 90 minutes and I was the last to speak. (Gina Smith was a tough act to follow, such funny stories)! After my first opening lines got solid laughs, Lynne decided to record the rest. I noted at the start that “I met John, back in 1982, but in the interest of time I’ll start with a series of anecdotes from 1987 ….” Trust me, after an hour and a half it was funny, you had to be there! And yes, it was a Memorial and there were many fine tributes, but there were plenty of jokes and jibes, exactly how John would have wanted it. Other notables in attendance – Fred Davis and Lisa Davis, G. (Gregg) Pascal Zachary, Gina Smith and cryptography pioneer Whit Diffie. Thank you Mimi Smith-Dvorak for inviting us.
