We did it.
Last week, @appmcjguild members voted 94% in a strike vote. 24 hours later, we reached a handshake deal on a contract (and @hvnewsguild the day after).
Strikes work.
Breaking news: WE WON!!!!!!!!
We've reached a tentative agreement with Gannett on a 2-year deal with strong salary floors and delivers life-changing raises to many of our members.
We’re also thrilled for our @hvnewsguild comrades, who also reached a TA.

If you're used to American trains, even the rail systems that Europeans deride are incredible by comparison. Far from "awful." Including UK.
I had to get from London to Reading, 40 miles away. There's ~10 trains per hour and it takes 23 MINUTES.
The internet told them Europe was a social paradise. Turns out the trains are awful, the health care isn’t free, and people can be really mean. buff.ly/5cLtnha

Only the Mets could acquire a guy from the eventual NL pennant winner and trade him to the eventual AL pennant winner.
That’s what they said about Kulusevski a year and a half ago.
De Zerbi told me he does not believe any of the Spurs players that came off tonight have bad injuries. football.london/tottenham-ho…
Hot take that shouldn't be a hot take: Stop celebrating a(n admittedly great) play that occurred during one of the worst losses in Mets history.
Watching the @dallascowboys struggle two weeks in a row reminded me of why we as a Jets offense were terrible in back to back afc championship games in '09' and '10'....mid OC by the name of Brian Schottenheimer.

Here’s another idea: don’t gut the transparency laws that allow reporters to expose this stuff. I sued for TapInto in 2023 & exposed the museum fiasco then, long before the auditor. There’s MORE to expose, but no teeth to OPRA. Things have gotten WORSE bc no one can sue now!
I have heard from so many people about the audit of Newark School District, and they all express appreciation that legislators are shining a light on these financial irregularities.
As @terrencemcd noted in his reporting, I want heads to roll over these findings. So do the hardworking residents of this state that live in communities where state aid is limited. And after reading the fluff responses from the very entities entrusted with overseeing Newark’s finances, I am more convinced that accountability is long overdue.
The @NewJerseyDOE needs to take a hard look at the safeguards supposedly protecting taxpayer dollars from waste and abuse. I am sick and tired of public officials signing off on financial decisions that enable these spending practices.
And here’s an idea: bring every official responsible for financial oversight before the Assembly and Senate Budget Committees, put them under oath, and make them explain what they knew, when they knew it, and what they did about it.
Bottom line: Every dollar wasted is a dollar taken away from Newark’s students. They deserve an education system that puts their needs first, protects the resources intended for their education, and gives them every opportunity to succeed in life.
Talk to people like @DawnFantasia_NJ or any person who has served in education. They want answers because they are working so hard with little resources.

Take a look at the AG's major discipline report and there is too high a tolerance for officers using racist, sexist, and homophobic slurs in the workplace (among a slew of other misconduct that would get anyone else in the private sector immediately canned).
Oh damn: A NJ appellate court has reinstated the removal of Roselle’s police chief, who had been fired for calling a gay cop a faggot and then reinstated by Civil Service njcourts.gov/system/files/co…
We all need room to grow.
RIP Jeff.

This is the dumbest thing I've heard since the creation of the ghost runner.
MLB has proposed returning to a 154-game Regular Season, best-of-seven Division Series, and opponent selection in the Wild Card and Division Series
Starting in 2029, shortening the season to a 154-game schedule would create a standard weekly off day benefiting player health, and it would allow the addition of up to 8 more Postseason games by moving to a best-of-seven Division Series format
Beginning in 2027, higher-seeded clubs in the Wild Card and Division Series would select their opponents
Mike Reed and Kristin Roberts responded to their employees' concerns over AI and Palantir not by actually talking to us but by feeding a line of bullshit to Fast Company.
New: USA Today Co.'s CEO tells me why the nation's largest newspaper chain tapped Palantir to help it mine reader data ("We're actually an intelligence organization now"), how it's responding to a newsroom revolt, and what it hopes to get from all the AI: fastcompany.com/91608398/usa…

Nick Sacco, a former North Bergen school administrator and state senator, collects a $232K annual pension. He also got a $270K payout for unused sick time. His wife, who also worked at the North Bergen Board of Ed, collects a $70K pension.
Generally people just shrug about this
Scoop: North Bergen Mayor Nicholas Sacco will resign tomorrow.

should’ve partnered with some more hits in the NLDS first
Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. has partnered with Kalshi, making him the first MLB player to venture into prediction markets.
Kalshi is also reportedly in talks with MLB for a leaguewide deal.

I sued in 2024 to get the agreement which exposed the no bid museum deal. TapIntoNewark wrote all about it.
Reporters & residents can work faster than state investigators, if we have the full force of OPRA. Restore OPRA!!
🚨 BREAKING: NJ’S STATE AUDITOR RELEASES NEWARK PUBLIC SCHOOLS AUDIT. “CERTAIN MATTERS” REFERRED TO THE STATE’S DIVISION OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE.
(Attached links to the audit & executive summary at the bottom of this post)
Nearly FOUR YEARS examined: July 2022–May 2026. Glaring failures in spending, oversight, & employee screening. MILLIONS in excess state aid & missed savings.
I spent the past year making noise and being chastised by the other side that I was out of line. Well, this “I told you so” doesn’t feel so good because kids, families, & taxpayers got hammered while apparently the board was dozing, elected officials deflected or buried their heads in the sand, & the superintendent ran the district like a drunk college kid on spring break with his parents’ credit card.
WHAT'S IN THE AUDIT:
▪️ Approximately $566K from the school district’s GENERAL FUND for an employee gym. Average daily use? SEVEN employees...with a full-time trainer. Newark claimed the gym services were paid for with "employee wellness funds". The auditors said Newark’s own documents showed costs were paid from the GENERAL FUND. No competitive bidding or board approval.
▪️ $2.5 MILLION upfront for a museum. A year past its deadline with no documentation re: construction progress, expenses, or updated timeline. Required DOE approval? No. Competitive bidding? Nope. The agreement totaled $4.5M, with potential additional costs. A $750K preservation grant? Missed because Newark didn’t own the property or hold a long-term lease.
▪️ $6.65 MILLION in excess state aid. Newark overstated enrollment by 128 students in two annual submissions. Taxpayers across the state paid for an inflated student count.
▪️ An estimated $18.7 M in missed health insurance savings over TWO years. Documentation showing the required 2025 review of insurance options was completed? Nope.
▪️ Approximately $1.3M in avoidable preschool payments. Enrollment fell below contractual thresholds, yet Newark stopped reducing payments. Providers got paid for seats they weren’t filling.
▪️ Approximately $4.7M in legal spending above the statewide per-student avg. over three years. Required cost-control procedures, or evidence they wouldn’t reduce costs? Nope.
▪️ Approximately $1.14M spent on catering over a two-year period. In the FY2024 transactions tested, approximately $184K lacked adequate documentation & approximately $49K exceeded meal-pricing limits, with possible overlap. SIXTEEN of 19 catered board meetings exceeded the $10-per-person limit.
▪️ $711,943 for Senior Day trips over three years. Carnival booths. DJs. Karaoke. Documentation of educational components of any kind whatsoever? Not provided. School General Fund money paid the bill.
▪️ $57,065 for a Central Office Staff "Fun Day". The board authorized $44K. Newark got around that by using two purchase orders. Auditors said that circumvented bidding requirements. DOE directed repayment of $33,649.07 in disallowed state aid from the first payment. Auditors said another $13,251 from the second payment should also be reimbursed.
▪️ $150,619 in required employee health contributions went uncollected. Another $41,602 paid ineligible medical & prescription claims during unpaid leave. Attempts to recover those outstanding contributions? None.
And then there’s this:
▪️ TEN employees had never completed required criminal background checks. Another 199 hadn’t properly updated their clearances for Newark. That left a gap in notifications if those 199 committed a disqualifying offense.
Live outside of Newark? State funding paid 88% of the district’s General Fund revenues during the three fiscal years examined. YOUR tax dollars were in that pot. Newark’s kids & families deserved better. EVERY TAXPAYER funding this debacle deserved better.
