It's Russian film week in Pyongyang this week, and Russian and North Korean filmmakers are negotiating joint projects and filming Russian films on North Korean soil. North Korean film week was held in Moscow earlier this month. Seems like a good time to share my story on how Russia is embracing North Korea off the battlefield, too. nytimes.com/2026/04/10/world…

A little story about how dehumanizing the russian state is and how passive/docile russian society is, devoid of any efficacy and agency. Putting any hope on russian society ending the war or demanding deimperialization or democracy after Putin is gone is extremely naive.
1/ After most Western journalists had to leave Russia in 2022, the country became a terra incognita. It is hard to get credible information out of it, let alone get Russians on camera speaking frankly about what they think. 🧵

The number of people injured in the Russian strike on a university campus and the surrounding area yesterday evening has risen to 12. Five of them are students and university staff. While emergency services were helping people and dealing with the aftermath of the first strike, the Russians used ballistic missiles again. In total, 16 ballistic missiles were launched overnight. More than 280 drones as well. Tragically, there have been casualties and hits in Kyiv, including on the South Bridge. A serious escalation in Russia’s operation against our logistics. There were also strikes on the Kyiv, Vinnytsia, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro, Kharkiv, Odesa, Chernihiv, Sumy, Donetsk, Kherson, and Chernivtsi regions. Almost everywhere, Russia’s targets were the energy sector, logistics, and ordinary urban infrastructure. The artificial and prolonged delays in the delivery of interceptor packages for Patriot and NASAMS systems, which unfortunately have occurred recently, are directly helping Russia achieve the objectives of its terrorist campaign. Every such delay means another Russian strike on one facility or another. Unfortunately, strikes are taking place every day. Russia is constantly taking new steps toward escalation. Pressure on Russia and real support for Ukraine are needed to change the situation. I thank everyone who truly supports our efforts to protect lives and understands the importance of support packages arriving on time. We must bring peace closer and save lives. Thank you to everyone who stands with Ukraine!

Italy and Spain demand solidarity whenever their debt blows up. But they show no solidarity when Ukraine gets invaded and freeride on Germany and others to pay. I think they misunderstand the word solidarity. What they do is grifting. That's different... robinjbrooks.substack.com/p/…

Europe and Canada are being connected by a direct undersea internet cable that bypasses the US. The project will be called Leif Erikson, named after one of the first Scandinavian explorers to reach America. It will be one of the first parts of Canada's "Sovereign Cable System" because a large majority of current cables are either passing by the US or controlled by US companies. The cable itself will be built and operated by Bulk, a Norwegian digital infrastructure company. Europe is building resilience into a global ecosystem that has many chokepoints controlled by the US.

General Józef Dowbor-Muśnicki, organiser and commander of the First Polish Corps in Russia (1917–1918) and Commander-in-Chief of the Greater Poland Army during the Greater Poland Uprising, died 89 years ago in Batorowo near Poznań. The soldiers under his command went on to distinguish themselves in the subsequent struggles to secure the borders of reborn Poland, while he himself became one of the symbols of the victorious Greater Poland Uprising. All the more painful, then, was his absence from the fight against Bolshevism in the summer of 1920, when his sense of honour compelled him to reject Piłsudski's offer to take command of an army that was suffering heavy losses in the defence of Lwów, replacing a former subordinate and friend. And so many of his soldiers were defending the Republic of Poland… At a time when the Bolsheviks were approaching Warsaw, the military career of one of Poland's most talented and best-educated generals came to an end. At the same time, he suffered a personal tragedy: the death of his beloved wife. He had another seventeen years to live – years filled with work, but also bitterness over the undeserved humiliations inflicted upon him by petty-minded men in a Poland that had finally regained its independence. He raised his children well: his son Gedymin fought against the communists in Spain, while his daughters… He left them a testament: "My children must remember that they are Poles, […] that their father did everything in his power to restore Poland to its former glory and strength. He therefore has the right to demand of his descendants that they never bring dishonour upon our family name". He did not live to witness the tragedy of September 1939 – the partition of the Republic of Poland between Germany and the Soviet Union. He passed away in 1937. Fate spared him the news of his daughters' deaths: Janina, murdered in Katyń, and Agnieszka, executed in Palmiry. This was how the homeland he had helped resurrect was being destroyed.

In the early hours of 22 October, C Company of the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada reached the church of Pieve Sestina, about 500 yards short of the main road north of Cesena. Including the tank hunters, Maj. Stewart Lynch had about 50 men. They had no tanks and no anti-tank guns, and the river behind them had risen six feet in five hours. Enemy tanks could be heard moving nearby. Sgt. K. P. Thompson laid a string of Hawkins grenades across the road at the junction beside the church and camouflaged them. Smith led his PIAT team across an open field under fire to a roadside ditch, then went back across the road with Pte. James Tennant for a second PIAT. First into the trap came a Volkswagen staff car, which passed between the mines. Behind it, a self-propelled gun struck one, lost a track and was finished off with PIAT bombs and grenades. Then came a Panther with infantry riding on its hull, sweeping the ditches with its machine guns. Tennant was hit. At 30 feet, in full view of the enemy, Smith fired. The Panther stopped and began backing away. About ten German infantrymen jumped off and charged him. Smith moved out into the road and killed four of them with his Tommy gun at point-blank range, and the rest fell back. Another tank opened fire and more infantry closed in. Gathering abandoned magazines from a ditch, Smith stood over his wounded friend until, in the words of his citation, the enemy “finally gave up and withdrew in disorder.” He then got Tennant to cover and medical help, and went back to his place by the road. “In the end there was just Jimmy and I, and then he got wounded so that left only me,” he said years later. “So I had to stay out there by myself while everybody else was in the church.” By 0600 the Germans had gone. Smith’s Victoria Cross was the only one ever awarded to a Seaforth, and the third and last won by a Canadian in Italy.

Remember when Russia supported and promoted Jill Stein in the 2016 US presidential election, helping Trump secure his first term? Well, apparently Musk pulled a similar stunt in 2024 with communist and spoiler candidate Cornel West. A Musk-linked dark money network reportedly helped fund his candidacy. By the way, Elon has now spent more money on US elections in the past two years than George Soros has in his entire lifetime.
