JCO nails it here.
And she should know. Her books are often about people who are nothing like her but are nonetheless deeply probing and compelling. She never drowned in Ted Kennedy’s car, for example.
really? what a narrow view! Anderson did in fact write sympathetically & convincingly about girls & women; even Hemingway has a story from an adolescent girl's perspective, "Up in Michigan," that is a knockout; not to mention D.H. Lawrence, Scott Fitzgerald, Thomas Hardy & (not least) Shakespeare.
if men can't write about women, women presumably can't write about men.
educated people can't write about lesser-educated people, Black writers can't write about brown people, people from Maine can't write about people from Vermont, no one can write about anyone except the sickly face in the mirror.

My new RealityChek post details why a recent @Courtenay_Brown piece for @axios on US manufacturing and her response to my criticism here were so thoroughly bizarre.

It’s so so so weird that progressives want corporations to hoard cash.

Good piece. Going into October, markets might be playing the Fed more than they are playing the ball. If the Fed does not hike in October, Warsh will have quite a bit of explaining to do.

Iran hostage crisis and the 1980 election. Specifically remember realizing how fiercely and ineffectively liberal establishment Republicans hated Reagan and tried to muster support for a would-be spoiler.
This is much better than the alternative.

It feels like there’s a psychological or political need within the financial media to describe every development as bad—and specifically as a bad result of The Great Orange Threat.
How have so many people I follow on here seen the Theranos lady and comedian movie?
It feels like what I call a Discourse Movie. Something folks see so they can write, post, and talk about it. Which is fine, especially when you’re a critic, pundit, podcaster, or take-merchant.
I have a very specific psychological allergy to Discourse Movies or shows. The more the public intellectual conversation appears to require participation or watching something, the more I want to avoid it.
I still haven’t seen The Odyssey, which I really wanted to see. Sometimes my own contrarianism gets in the way.
Hmmm. Seem to remember a prior GOP guy turned the government into an investor in every large financial institution in the U.S.
Of course, of course: "Trump turned the government into an investor. Democrats have shopping plans, too." semafor.com/article/10/21/20…

I think the market is underestimating the odds of a hike next week.
