destiel is 100% canon from both sides. not semi-canon. not “cas said it and dean’s feelings are open to interpretation.” they’re not.
bobo made destiel canon from dean’s side all the way back in s10. in “the executioner’s song,” cain tells dean he’s cursed to live his story in reverse — killing cas first, then sam. in cain’s own story he killed his brother abel first, then the love of his life, colette. if dean is living it in reverse, killing cas first and sam second, that means cas was literally written as dean’s colette. the love of his life. while sam is his abel. this is not subtext. it’s the text of the episode. and it was written by the same man who wrote the confession scene. bobo himself has confirmed cas was dean’s colette. just accept it.
15x18 “despair,” also written by bobo, isn’t only about cas’s pov. the entire episode is about people losing the loves of their lives and falling apart. charlie loses stevie, her romantic interest. sam loses eileen, his romantic interest. and then dean loses cas. the structure of the episode itself confirms that cas was dean’s romantic interest. where did everyone get the idea that this episode only made destiel canon from cas’s side? that’s completely false. they were already written as being in love with each other long before that. cas being dean’s colette — the love of his life — was already canon in 10x14. dean being cas’s human weakness the same way lily sunder was ishim’s (the human he was in love with) was already canon too (12x10).
why do people accept claire and kaia as canon when they never even said “i love you”? a ship doesn’t need an “i love you” to be canon. jody confirmed kaia was the love of claire’s life. cain confirmed cas was the love of dean’s life. end of discussion.
and two more things from the last episodes:
one episode before cas’s confession, sam is desperate trying to stop dean from going through with billie’s plan. the second sam explains that if he becomes the new god, eileen — the person he’s in love with — will die again, dean turns and looks at cas. because he realizes the same thing would happen to cas. because cas is to dean what eileen is to sam: his romantic interest. canonically.
then, one episode after the confession, they had lucifer impersonate cas to ask dean to let him in. and canonically, lucifer only used that tactic by impersonating dead love interests: sarah for nick, jessica for sam, and jen for vince vincente. that was his mo. he showed up disguised as the person someone had loved and lost to manipulate them into saying yes and letting him in. for dean, that lost love was castiel.
so destiel is 100% canon from both sides. not just canon from cas and subtext from dean. the only thing we didn’t get to see was their romantic reunion in heaven. they were endgame off-screen, the same way claire and kaia were. claire’s feelings were confirmed by jody. kaia’s reciprocity was shown when jody asked if she wanted to go back to her house in sioux falls and kaia’s immediate response was “will claire be there?” with a little smile when she heard yes. another canon couple who were endgame off-screen, just like destiel.
dean only smiled for the first time in heaven when he heard cas was there and knew he’d see him again. it’s the exact same thing as kaia only agreeing to go with jody once she knew claire would be there and that she’d get to see her again.
JUST ACCEPT THAT IT’S CANON.
