Il n’y a rien de légitime dans cette demande. L’UE a 27 pays membres. Lorsqu’une conférence est organisée par Bruxelles, seuls ses représentants ont le droit de parole afin d’assurer que l’Union parle d’une seule voix. Si les pays membres ont des commentaires ou réservations, ils les communiquent en coulisse, pas de faire un spectacle avec une chaise vide. Le Québec n’est même pas un pays. À l’égard de l’UE, il n’est pas plus que la Catalogne. Cependant, c’est beaucoup plus qu’une simple question de protocole diplomatique. Beaucoup de travaux et négociations sont déjà faits derrière la scène depuis des semaines. La rencontre des dirigeants à la même table a une importance particulière même si elle est souvent symbolique. Cette touche finale a pour but de donner un élan d’unité fort à cette alliance canado-européenne. Le but ici c’est d’annoncer au monde entier malgré qu’il y a encore de différences entre nous - on est capable de travailler ensemble pour le bien être de tous. Les réactions théâtrales de M. Plamondon ne font qu’attirer l’attention sur lui même. Nous payons tous pour son orgueil. Qu’est-ce qu’il peut contribuer en prenant le micro? Vous parlez d’une demande légitime mais j’ai de la difficulté à comprendre pourquoi ce geste nous aidera? #poliqc

People said the same thing when PM Carney spoke about the Plaines d’Abraham being the starting point of Canada that eventually led to the Confederation in January of this year, followed by his firm stance a few months later that 50%+1 vote is not a clear majority in an independence referendum. Nearly all pundits were convinced the PM was wrong to make those statements and that the Liberals would take a beating. Worse, they were convinced that this was going to help PQ and Plamondon since he was very vocal about those remarks and was working hard to milk them. The reality is following those remarks, the LPC’s polling kept going up as did the PM’s own popularity in Québec. First, the Liberals won the rematch by election in Terrebone, a nationalist stronghold that almost always goes to BQ or PQ. If that’s not enough, this was followed by a crushing victory in Chicoutimi with over 50%+ of the votes in a riding at the heart of nationalist country that is nearly 100% francophone. And what about Plamondon himself? Per the latest available polling this month, PSPP’s approval rating is negative 20%, yes that’s -20% and progressively going from bad to worse, rivalling that of Poilievre in Québec. I am sure the wrong again pundits will come around to tell us what a grave error this is. 🤷‍♂️ The way I see it, there are two problems here with such perception. 1) If the Federal Government has intruded into provincial jurisdiction of Québec, this would have been decried as bloody murder so why shouldn’t Ottawa hold the line for transgressions of federal competence? Or as we say in French: “Deux poids, deux mesures” 2) Regarding this being framed as a political miscalculation - is it? Notwithstanding any excessive favouritism towards Québec can be seen as appeasing a separatist movement, the sense of injustice could be more costly to the Liberals in the long run elsewhere. Yet this doesn’t mean such exceptional courtesy will necessarily be remembered or reciprocated. It’s not like the LPC is in a precarious position in Québec. The fact is Québec Government was invited to attend the EU-Canada summit. Instead of using this opportunity to meet the European dignitaries who will be present and pragmatically further the interests of Quebec like the Premier of Saskatchewan Scott Moe has been doing on many occasions, PSPP still doesn’t seem to understand his new role and the responsibilities that come with it. He seems to be “en formation” still. This latest reincarnation of PQ is heavy on performative theatrics, short on substance. Plamondon mistakenly believes such chicanery will continue to serve him well like it did when they only had 3 seats. The truth is the vast majority of voters want to see concrete results from a serious Premier who can quickly tackle the major dossiers. We have seen how the current WH occupant tries to distract the populace with outrages, anything except responsible governing. If Plamondon is trying to replicate such American tactic, he will fail. The misdirection can only go so far, voters’ patience is always short especially for a minority mandate with barely 28% of the votes. #cdnpoli #poliqc
