Recent and ongoing developments within the region reflect a broader continental trajectory of democratic regression in so far as tenets meant to uphold sustainable democracy are concerned. The continent has witnessed a surge in unconstitutional changes of government (UCGs) all while more than a dozen African countries experiencing active conflict were recorded in 2025. As democracy comes under increasing pressure across the African continent, CDF invites you to join an important live X Space discussion which will consider critical questions around the future of the rule of law, constitutionalism and sustainable democracy in Africa. The discussion will feature CDF Convener @BitiTendai alongside other African voices. Join us tomorrow at 7:00pm (CET) on the following link: xitter.cf/i/spaces/1mGPaZk… #towardsustainabledemocracy #RestoreConstitutionalism #TogetherWeDefend

CDF welcomes the release of its National Youth Leader, @Che_Guevara_ZW after spending days in police detention. He has been accused of disorderly conduct and another charge stems from posting pictures of citizens holding yellow cards, an online protest carried out to flag the illegitimacy of CAA3. These charges have forced him to pay an admission of guilt fine at station rates and he is now free. CDF maintains that his arrest was illegal and marks a grave affront of constitutional guarantees to freedom of peaceful protest, expression, association and assembly. #RestoreConstitutionalism #TogetherWeDefend

CONTINUED DETENTION OF NARSHON T. KOHLO Our National Youth Leader, @Che_Guevara_ZW, continues to be detained in police custody. The State is yet to formally charge him, although police had earlier indicated an intention to prefer a charge relating to the alleged incitement of public disorder. We condemn the continued detention of Narshon and reject any attempt to criminalise legitimate political expression. Holding a constitutional defender while searching for a charge exposes a disturbing use of state power against dissent. Narshon is being represented by Brighton Sadowera of @ZLHRLawyers. Our demand is unequivocal, release Narshon immediately and restore constitutionalism. @HRF @CHR_HumanRights @saih @FrontLineHRD @DefendDefenders @NorwayMFA @amnesty_zim @CIVICUSalliance @AnneBeathe_ @DavidColtart @OsloFF #FreeNarshon #RestoreConstitutionalism

🚨 ALERT: CDF PROGRAMS DIRECTOR RECEIVES DEATH THREATS 🚨 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SUNGANO CONDEMNS DEATH THREATS AGAINST TREVOR SARUWAKA 5 October 2026 Sungano yeVanhu – Ubumbano Lomphakathi (The People’s Coalition) has been informed of deeply disturbing telephone calls made to Mr Trevor Saruwaka, Programme Director of the Constitution Defenders Forum (CDF) and Acting Chairperson of Sungano’s Organising Committee. The callers, who purported to be associated with law-enforcement agencies, threatened Mr Saruwaka with death and made specific reference to his role in encouraging Zimbabweans to participate in the National Day of Prayer called by the Church. Attached is the audio recording of the threatening call. Mr Saruwaka is the brother of the late young Kudzai Weston Saruwaka who was killed in South Africa following a period in which he had been publicly associated with advocacy against the 2030 Agenda then being championed by Cde Blessed “Bombshell” Geza. If persons claiming the authority of the State are now threatening citizens with death for encouraging people to pray for their country, this represents an extremely serious abuse that demands investigation. Prayer is not a crime. Worship is not a crime. Encouraging Zimbabweans to gather peacefully before God is not a crime. Freedom of conscience and religion is protected by section 60 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, while peaceful assembly and association are protected by sections 58 and 59. These constitutional freedoms belong to every Zimbabwean and cannot lawfully be extinguished through anonymous telephone calls, intimidation or threats of violence. Sungano-Ubumbano condemns these threats unequivocally. ISSUED BY: Information and Communications Desk Sungano yeVanhu – Ubumbano Lomphakathi (The People’s Coalition)

🚨SUNGANO/UBUMBANO COALITION COURT UPDATE🚨 Fellow Zimbabweans, We understand the frustration and despondency many citizens are feeling following the passage and signing into law of CAB3. But difficult is not the same as finished. As Prof. Lovemore Madhuku, a Sungano/Ubumbano Coalition Principal and Lead Counsel in the cases before the Court has explained: The Constitutional Court is yet to hear and determine the main constitutional challenges to CAB3. So do not surrender to despair. Stay informed. Stay peaceful. Stay constitutional. Stay hopeful. The Constitution belongs to the people, and the constitutional questions surrounding CAB3 are not yet settled. Difficult is not the same as finished Justice in the Courts. Sovereignty with the People. SUNGANO YEVANHU – UBUMBANO LOMPHAKATHI (THE PEOPLE’S COALITION) Information and Communications Desk

In a presser convened by Sungano Yevanhu/Ubumbano Lomphakathi Coalition, Coalition member & CDF Convener @BitiTendai made it clear that any attempts to destroy Zimbabwe and establish a monarchy will be fiercely resisted. Section 1 of the Constitution makes it clear that "Zimbabwe is a unitary, democratic and sovereign republic". The regime that assumed power after November 2017 called itself 'The Second Republic' in acknowledgement of this irrefutable fact. CDF is thus resolute in its position that any attempts to reverse this basic structure would be completely disconnected from the Constitution and therefore blatantly unlawful from the onset. #RestoreTheConstitution #constitutiondefenders #TogetherWeDefend
It “ a blatant coup to try and introduce a monarchy in Zimbabwe, Mnangagwa is not even from the Munhumutapa clan it’s all pretense”, says @BitiTendai

Yesterday CDF Freedom Fighters Spokesperson Cde Rueben Zulu was joined by other gallant sons and daughters of Zimbabwe in seeking direct access to the Constitutional Court to challenge the legality of Constitution Amendment Act No.3 of 2026 (CAA3). The applicants argued that the matter is of significant public interest and further that CAB3 ought to have been subjected to a referendum. Judgment was reserved. CDF now awaits the Court's decision and hopes that direct access will be granted thereby allowing the substantive constitutional questions surrounding CAA3 to be fully argued and determined. Among those standing in solidarity with the War Veterans was CDF Youth Desk Chairperson @Che_Guevara_ZW CAB3 may have been signed into law but CDF is making it clear that the fight is far from over. #RestoreTheConstitution #hatinakubvunzwa #thinaabantuasibuzwanga

CDF LEADERSHIP SPOTLIGHT Radical. Fearless. Principled. Unbought. Cde Peace T. Hardy is a Zimbabwean student activist, youth organiser and advocate for democracy, constitutionalism and social justice whose civic consciousness was forged in the struggles of the student movement. A former Chairperson of the Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) University of Zimbabwe Chapter, Hardy emerged as a vocal representative of students and young people, consistently confronting the socioeconomic conditions undermining access to education and the dignity of Zimbabwe's academic community. During his student leadership, he championed the struggle for accessible and affordable education, while lending his voice to the welfare and working conditions of lecturers and the broader challenges confronting students and tertiary institutions. His activism situates education not merely as an academic question, but as a fundamental instrument of social and economic emancipation. Beyond the university campus, Hardy has developed into an outspoken advocate for democratic governance, human rights, constitutionalism and accountable public institutions. His activism reflects a conviction that Zimbabwe's young people must move beyond being spectators in national affairs and become organised participants in shaping the country's future. Hardy has also participated in regional conversations on youth leadership, governance, democracy and human rights, using such platforms to articulate the experiences and aspirations of Zimbabwean students and young people while engaging with the wider struggles for democratic governance and social justice across Africa. As Student Coordinator of the Constitution Defenders Forum, Hardy is part of the effort to organise, conscientise and mobilise students and young citizens around the defence of Zimbabwe's constitutional order. His work seeks to deepen constitutional literacy among young people and transform constitutionalism from an abstract legal concept into a living culture of active citizenship. For Hardy, the Constitution belongs not only in courtrooms, Parliament or the offices of lawyers. It belongs in universities, colleges, communities and in the hands of ordinary citizens who must understand it, defend it and demand that political power remains subject to it. His leadership is anchored in the belief that the youth constitute a decisive force in Zimbabwe's democratic transformation. He therefore advocates an organised and courageous generation capable of defending constitutional democracy, demanding accountable leadership and confronting injustice wherever it manifests itself. From the student movement to the constitutional struggle, Cde Peace T. Hardy represents a generation determined to organise, mobilise and defend the democratic aspirations of the Zimbabwean people. #RestoreConstitutionalism #Togetherwedefend

CDF LEADERSHIP SPOTLIGHT Majangove Romana Natalie is a Zimbabwean human rights activist and defender whose work is rooted in the advancement of human rights, constitutional democracy, social justice, and meaningful citizen participation in governance. She is particularly passionate about empowering young people and communities with the knowledge, confidence, and platforms necessary to understand, exercise, and defend their constitutional rights. Her activism encompasses the documentation of human rights violations, civic and constitutional education, gender equality, youth participation, and democratic accountability. Through her work, Natalie contributes to efforts aimed at strengthening citizen agency and creating spaces in which communities can engage critically with issues affecting their rights, livelihoods, and participation in public affairs. Through her involvement with Protect Defenders Zw and the FES ZYL Alumni Association, she facilitates community dialogues and civic engagements focusing on constitutionalism, human rights, gender equality, democratic governance, and the participation of young people in political and decision-making processes. Her approach places particular emphasis on grassroots engagement and the importance of translating constitutional principles into practical tools that ordinary citizens can use to demand accountability and participate meaningfully in shaping their communities and country. Natalie has also participated in international and regional leadership platforms, bringing perspectives informed by Zimbabwean youth activism and grassroots human rights work into broader conversations on democracy, development, leadership, and social justice. In 2025, her international engagements included speaking at platforms associated with the G20 Summit and the Amazon Initiative Leadership Forum, contributing to conversations that connected local struggles for dignity and democratic accountability with wider global challenges. Her leadership development has been strengthened through a number of civic and political education programmes. She is an alumna of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) Youth Leadership Training Programme (YLTP) 2025, the FES Masterclass for Women, and the Transparency International Zimbabwe (TIZ) School of Integrity. These programmes have complemented her practical activism with exposure to leadership development, democratic governance, gender justice, integrity, accountability, and movement-building. At the heart of Natalie's work is a conviction that sustainable democratic transformation must be anchored in informed, organised, and empowered citizens. She therefore views human rights advocacy not simply as the defence of individual liberties, but as part of the broader struggle to build institutions and communities founded on justice, dignity, equality, constitutionalism, and accountable governance. She remains committed to strengthening people-powered movements, amplifying the voices of young people and marginalised communities, and contributing to a Zimbabwe in which citizens are able to participate freely and meaningfully in determining their collective future. #RestoreTheConstitution #TogetherWeDefend

Does the World Bank’s criteria for measuring economic growth accurately reflect the lived realities of ordinary citizens? Can economic growth truly be considered meaningful if it does not translate into social and economic justice, decent livelihoods, employment, access to essential services and improved living standards? Tonight, CDF Convener Hon. Tendai Biti and CDF Deputy National Spokesperson, Chiedza Mlingwa, will be part of a SAPES Trust Policy Dialogue that will seek to answer these fundamental questions. As Zimbabwe confronts a growing social crisis, it is important to look beyond headline economic indicators and examine who benefits from economic growth, who bears its costs, and whether growth is translating into tangible improvements in the lives of ordinary Zimbabweans.
