We've been getting a lot of questions lately about how the Internet Archive digitizes books. The short answer: page by page, by hand. You may remember our viral 2021 video of Eliza Zhang scanning a book. That's still how we do it. Meet Eliza, and learn how we scan books: blog.archive.org/2021/02/09/…

Benefits of music practice vary from person to person. In our newest study, we show that genetic differences in cognitive abilities play a role in why individuals might differentially benefit from practice, suggesting G x E interaction 🧬🎵 doi.org/10.1016/j.heliyon.20…

”Annoyance and irritation, though, are often taken as a sign that the concerns aren’t that big of a deal, that the arguments are mere quibbles that can be safely dismissed. Call this the eyeroll heuristic: if it’s preachy and annoying, it’s OK to ignore it.”👏 @evan_westra

”Terms like excellence,” the ACE authors advise, “are indicative of the way in which opera and music theatre still retains unhelpful hierarchies about what kinds of work are valued.” Instead, ”engage with the stories of the contemporary nation” (or else). theguardian.com/commentisfre…

”Most children learning maths do not need their teachers to intentionally cause them to struggle because they are going to struggle anyway . . . What they need most when facing a new problem is strategies they can apply to solving it — which is why we have maths teachers.”

The extraordinary 'Optical illusion' of the marble mosaic tiles of the 17th Century AD, Florence Cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore, Italy. The mosaic optical illusion of the Cathedral, seen from above, this intricate geometry creates the illusion of a giant abyss into which people could stumble. The red, white, black and green marble floor was a colossal job that took 160 years to complete. It was built by the grand Florentine craftsmen, led by the Renaissance sculptor Baccio d'Agnolo, and completed in 1660 AD. The primary goal of the builders was to surpass the splendor of the Roman imperial floors, especially those of the Pantheon. The result forms a gigantic unit of fascinating geometric carpets, lined within the arches of the cathedral. In various parts of the floor you can see the coat of arms of the Medici family, the family of bankers who left an indelible mark on all of Florence and who played a leading role in the completion of the cathedral. - Subscribe for Weekly Newsletter - archaeo-histories.beehiiv.co… #archaeohistories
