If the results out of Germany mean anything, it's that there is no effective way to get a society to heed "the lessons of the past." People too young to have experienced certain events just aren't receptive to what those lessons teach us. Especially after 2-3 generations.
It's a serious challenge, and I'm not sure what the solution is. Homo sapiens is a very *clever* species, but we're not reliably wise or reflective. And our nature — human nature — doesn't change. The terrible things people 80 or 100 or 300 or 3,000 years ago were capable of? We're very much still capable of doing those same things.

To me this is the single biggest surprise of the election. I wasn't optimistic about a great Dem wave, nor was I pessimistic: I was *hopeful*. I knew there was a strong chance they'd win the Senate, and I thought a House majority was a done deal. But I was thinking 225-230...maybe a bit more.
But 260? This is fucking surreal. In some ways 2026 is the most decisive electoral outcome since 1980.

And let's not forget this: what happened on Tues strengthens Democratic Party's 2028 presidential odds. Dems won statewide in TX, SC, Mississippi, Iowa, etc, and surely this suggests the electoral votes of such states are at least in play (not easy wins, but at least plausible).

Fetterman may have been planning to act as kingmaker in a narrowly divided Senate, but now he's got zero leverage and will likely be primaried out of his seat in 2028.
